10 Striking Eye Makeup Looks to Pair With Face Masks Courtesy of the Spring 2021 Collections

Images: Imaxtree

We all need to wear face masks when we’re out and about. Period. But since said masks cover a good portion of our faces, many of us have put makeup on hold. Especially since we’ve been stuck at home. (Although we sometimes swipe on some lipstick for a Zoom call.) Our lips may be hidden by our masks, but our eyes are on full display. So it wasn’t surprising to see the Spring 2021 collections offering up eye makeup looks with face masks in mind.

The cat eye is a popular choice, but with several twists. From negative space takes to smudged corners, it all feels so fresh. Bold shadows are trending as well. Think blue, red, pink and green applied on lids, beneath eyebrows and extended out to hairlines. Swipes of strategic mascara were also spotted.

Ready to up your eye makeup game? Here are the best eye makeup looks to flaunt while wearing your favorite face mask.

Wearing Blazers With Sweatpants Is Our New Fall Uniform

sweatpants and blazers

Image: Imaxtree

We’ve already drawn your attention to Katie Holmes’ uncanny fashion sense. But the actress just took things to a new (pandemic-appropriate) level. She was recently spotted out and about in a blazer and a pair of sweatpants. And they work surprisingly well together. So now we’re obsessed with finding the perfect sweatpants and blazers to see us through fall. And maybe winter.

Our criteria? No overly baggy, hole-filled sweatpants allowed. The blazers have a bit more leeway. They can be boxy, oversized or tailored. It all comes down to coordination. You need to find the perfect match, otherwise you’ll look sloppy instead of sophisticated. While Katie styled her pairing with a white top and sneakers, feel free to opt for a more street style approach. Just dress up your joggers with a frilly blouse and a sleek suit jacket. Or you can rock your blazer of choice with nothing underneath.

On the footwear front, you can obviously keep things comfy with cool kicks. If you want to elevate the look, slip on some strappy sandals, loafers or ankle boots.

To save time, we put together 10 pairs of sweatpants and blazers that look like they were made for each other. They’re perfect for Zoom calls, running errands or date night.

Elle Fanning Gets Upstaged by Her Canine Companions on Vanity Fair’s October 2020 Cover

Elle Fanning has an unsurpassed track record on our forums. Whether the actress is serving up “fairy-tale fantasy” on American Vogue, trying a whole new look for Vogue Japan, going retro for Tatler or just serving pure beauty and grace on Marie Claire, Elle’s covers are always a hit. Three years after her debut on the publication, Elle makes a return to the cover of Vanity Fair for October 2020. Photographed by Tierney Gearon and styled by Rebecca Ramsey, the star of Hulu’s The Great poses high atop the hills of Malibu wearing a dress from Christian Dior’s Fall 2020 collection with some canine companions by her side for the breezy cover shot.

But the cover ended Elle’s winning streak. “Why does she look so annoyed? And when I scrolled down I did not expect to see those dogs, how random! Wish her pose could’ve been stronger to play up the Grecian look. This would have been stunning,” critiqued Benn98.

“Such a flat picture,” said an underwhelmed mikel.

“I love Elle and I love the styling, but how is this not an outtake? She looks beyond pissed off,” KINGofVERSAILLES pointed out.

Also far from impressed was cottonmouth13: “What a waste of Elle Fanning. They could have done so much better considering this is her first solo cover for them. It’s more like an amateur photo that belongs to her Instagram for content purposes, but Vanity Fair decided to use it…”

“Seriously, what is happening here? Elle Fanning deserves much better,” stated dodencebt.

“I mean when you pick THIS shot as the cover, you really have no clue what you are doing!” proclaimed Miss Dalloway.

“Pretty bad when you’re upstaged by the dogs,” dfl-001 chimed in.

Are you a fan? See more from Elle’s cover shoot and join the debate here.

Milan Fashion Week Spring 2021 Delivers More Misses Than Hits

Images: Imaxtree

Milan Fashion Week Spring 2021 is over so it’s time to reflect on the highs and lows. The street style was a definite high note, per usual. But the collections are another story. At least according to our forum members.

Fendi kicked things off with a show featuring models Eva Herzigova, Yasmin Le Bon and Penelope Tree sporting Silvia Venturini Fendi’s last solo offering before Kim Jones joins the team. Everyone was glued to their computer screens to witness Raf Simons’ co-creative director debut over at Prada. Giorgio Armani gave us yet another stunning collection. Donatella Versace basically rehashed Gianni Versace’s iconic Spring 1992 collection. Jeremy Scott relied on marionettes to showcase his latest Moschino collection. Even in the midst of a pandemic, Dolce & Gabbana created a staggering number of looks. Pierpaolo Piccioli had the honor of closing out the week. But his latest Valentino collection turned out to be unworthy of an actual runway show.

While lots of big brands disappointed, several more under-the-radar labels really delivered. Ready to see which collections made an impression on our forum members? Then click through the slideshow above to see the hits and many misses of Milan Fashion Week Spring 2021.

The Many Perks of Adding Coffee to Your Beauty Routine

Whether your preference is black, latte, espresso or even iced, coffee is our trusty go-to to get us through the day. (Especially during the chaos that is fashion week.) But that caffeine fix also has serious perks for your skin.

You’ve probably noticed java notes in your favorite perfumes, but it’s also used in everything from scrubs to eye creams. That’s because it’s chock-full of antioxidants to protect skin from environmental aggressors. It also triggers blood flow and promotes collagen production. And coffee grounds are awesome exfoliators.

When it comes to beauty, you definitely don’t want to favor decaffeinated. Caffeine has anti-inflammatory properties to help calm complexions and lure out excess fluid from cells, allowing your skin to tone and tighten.

Here are the best coffee beauty products to stimulate bright and bouncy skin.

Rianne Van Rompaey Hits the Slopes for Vogue Paris’ October 2020 Cover

We have been singing Vogue Paris’ praises lately and it’s all thanks to Emmanuelle Alt’s determination to deliver total escapism via the French fashion bible. We’ve loved seeing the stellar covers starring Gigi and Bella Hadid, Mica Argañaraz, Natalia Vodianova and Malika Louback. Now Alt welcomes back Rianne Van Rompaey for October 2020. The five-time Vogue Paris cover star is back a little over a year after her last appearance taking to the slopes before the lens of photographer Carlijn Jacobs. Alt styled the Dutch beauty in a Miu Miu bodysuit, Prada goggles and Moncler ski boots for the perfectly kitsch shot.

The cover was definitely a hit. “I love this — love the tongue-in-cheek concept with the fake background, the fake snow and the fake fan,” said vogue28.

“I love this cover! It’s cheesy, it’s fun, unpretentious…” approved Lola701.

SLFC also loved the outcome: “I’m not complaining at all. Rianne on Vogue Paris is heaven.”

“I could have Rianne on the cover for every month of the year and I wouldn’t complain, the girl is a superstar! As usual, she looks absolutely magnificent and I actually think this might be one of their best covers this year. Very tongue-in-cheek, I love the tacky vibe and the setting,” added aracic.

“I actually love it! It looks so tacky but in a fun way. Only Alt can make this work,” noted MON.

Forum member artemovartem was also a fan. “Emmanuelle is the editor of the year! Even in the pandemic she managed to produce solid covers. I especially love this one. Just wow!”

Do you love the cover as much as we do? Check out the contents of the issue and share your thoughts here.

All the Street Style You Can Handle From Milan Fashion Week Spring 2021

We have a confession. While we adore all the street style looks coming out of New York, London and Paris, Milan has our sartorial heart. That’s because nearly every ensemble offers serious inspo. And Milan Fashion Week Spring 2021 is no exception.

The key takeaways? Orange and purple are this season’s standout colors. Quilted coats are still in. Jumpsuits and suits are both weekend staples. Slouchy boots go best with slouchy pants. Fringe is going to be with us for the long haul and bags should be as bold as the rest of your outfit.

Turn off your phone and find a comfy chair because browsing through all the street style goodness from Milan Fashion Week Spring 2021 is going to take a while.

Anna Ewers Stars in Max Mara’s ‘Beautiful’ Fall 2020 Campaign

We have enjoyed Steven Meisel’s Max Mara campaigns since 2016. That’s because the legendary lensman provides stunning imagery for the Italian fashion label’s ads by capturing everyone from Gigi Hadid to Fei Fei Sun to Grace Elizabeth. Unfortunately, last season’s campaign fell completely flat. So we’re happy to see a stark change for Fall 2020. Brigitte Niedermair replaces Meisel as campaign photographer ushering in Anna Ewers as the brand’s fresh face. The firm forum favorite (styled by Carine Roitfeld) poses in the studio for the series of utterly beautiful and charming portraits.

Members of our forums immediately began raving about the outcome. “I love this! I mean I do love Anna, but even without being bias, I like the vintage nature of the photos. It’s classic and beautiful,” approved bluestar.

“It’s very soft and classic indeed, I love it. Almost like a painting,” dodencebt pointed out.

“This is turning out to be a beautiful campaign and oh so quintessentially Max Mara. As much as I adore Steven Meisel, last season’s campaign was a total snoozefest and Brigitte Niedermair has undoubtedly done wonders here for all its simplicity,” praised vogue28.

GERGIN was definitely a fan. “I actually like this a lot, love the heavy dark looks contrasting against Anna’s soft, light features.”

YohjiAddict shared the same sentiment: “Anna looks like her old self, nowadays she looks really bored in her pictures, but not here. The warm background is quite pleasing against the navy of the clothes.”

“Please give us more Anna Ewers,” pleaded dontbeadrag.

Zposen described the campaign as “really gorgeous” and we agree.

20 Statement Turtlenecks Too Cool to Cover Up

Turtlenecks are fashion folks’ go-to base in fall. There are plenty of basic numbers, but now designers are taking turtlenecks up a notch. How? By transforming them from secret weapons to statement makers.

From tie-dye to seasonally-appropriate florals, the latest turtlenecks definitely demand to be seen. They’re basically begging for an Instagram shout-out. Trust us, these turtlenecks are worth braving the cold to show off. Besides, you can always layer something underneath to stay warm.

Check out the slideshow above for 20 statement turtlenecks. These showstoppers absolutely deserve to be the star of your outfit, not merely cast in a supporting role.

Lizzo Graces the Cover of Vogue’s October 2020 Issue

There’s definitely a recurring theme when it comes to this year’s Vogue covers. At least so far. Every cover subject (apart from Ashley Graham) has never fronted the magazine before. See Florence Pugh, Billie Eilish and Simone Biles. Following a pair of painted September covers, it’s finally Lizzo’s turn to grace the American fashion bible. For the October 2020 cover, Lizzo poses wearing a red Valentino dress (courtesy of Carlos Nazario) before the lens of Hype Williams.

But the cover clearly falls flat for our forum members. “Hot mess. Nothing works here. From the amateur photography to the unflattering styling,” critiqued avonlea002.

“I can only imagine how much more elevated this would’ve turned out had Ethan James Green been behind the lens. What a total nonevent of a shoot, which reads more like a lookbook than it does a cover story for Vogue! Major, MAJOR disappointment,” voiced vogue28.

[ Not a tFS forum member yet? Click here to join! ]

“She deserved to be shot by an actual photographer!” declared russianelf.

“It’s hard to believe that could be the cover. If it is, Anna has left the building and we’re all the last to know,” added tigerrouge.

Mercredi obviously isn’t a fan: “It’s really disturbing to see that zero effort has been made to make this cover. From the cheap-looking dress to the photography everything is wrong here.”

“Lizzo got cheated here for sure. Her energy and charisma are just lost…” honeycombchild chimed in.

Check out Lizzo’s accompanying cover story and share your thoughts here.

All the October 2020 Magazine Covers We Loved and Hated

Another month, another chance to see glossies get creative when it comes to producing covers. For October 2020, we are treated to illustrated images and actual photoshoots. Not to mention plenty of great fall fashion. (We’re choosing to ignore British Vogue’s 80s prom dress and Vogue Paris’ snow bunny gear.)

On our must-buy list this season? Quilted coats along with some fantastic fringed items. The style is especially stellar. The beauty, on the other hand, is more hit or miss. Selena Gomez’s ode to Frida Kahlo and Cynthia Erivo’s matching lilac shadow are definitely wins. The hairdos on Vogue Germany and British Vogue belong firmly in the miss column.

See the slideshow above for the best and worst October 2020 covers. Here’s hoping November gives us more diversity and more fall-appropriate outfit ideas.

Report: Racial and Gender Diversity Increase, Size and Age Inclusivity Drop at New York Fashion Week Spring 2021

New York Fashion Week Spring 2021

Models at Chromat Spring 2021; Image: Imaxtree

We knew heading into the Spring 2021 season that things would look a bit different. Thanks to the ongoing pandemic, pulling off traditional runway shows became a whole lot trickier. For some designers, the risks outweighed the benefits. Others opted to showcase their wares in other formats, like lookbooks and video presentations. All of these adjustments definitely had an impact on our diversity findings. Some for the better, others not so much.

RACE

New York Fashion Week Spring 2021

After reviewing 287 model appearances across 48 “shows,” New York Fashion Week Spring 2021 saw a pretty significant bump in racial diversity. This season boasted 57.1 percent models of color way up from Fall 2020’s 43.6 percent. The increase may be explained by the decrease in designers showing in New York this season. Or the fact that the fashion world suddenly grew a conscience after social injustice found its way back into the spotlight. (We hope neither is the main motivator since we’re looking for long-lasting diversity, not temporary appeasement.)

Whatever the reason, Spring 2021 is now New York’s most racially diverse season since we started keeping track during the Spring 2015 season. While we’ll take what we can get, we’re worried that come Fall 2021, we’ll see a swing back in the other direction.

TOP MODELS

New York Fashion Week Spring 2021

Annibelis Baez walking for Ulla Johnson Spring 2021; Image: Imaxtree

We’re happy to report that the top model of New York Fashion Week Spring 2021 is a woman of color. Afro-Dominican beauty Annibelis Baez appeared in four shows. (Compare that with last season when top South Korean model and street style star Sora Choi, British-Moroccan beauty Nora Attal, the United States’ own Abby Champion, U.K. native Lara Mullen, familiar French face Cyrielle Lalande, Josefine Lynderup from Denmark and Chinese model Yilan Hua all tied for the top spot by walking in 11 shows.)

Sasha Knysh scored the second spot appearing in a grand total of three shows. She and Baez both walked for Jason Wu and Ulla Johnson. Baez also represented R13 and Theory, while Knysh modeled for Anna Sui.

New York Fashion Week Spring 2021

Sasha Knysh walking at Jason Wu Spring 2021; Image: Imaxtree

Once again, size, age and gender representation was missing from the top models list.

PLUS-SIZE

New York Fashion Week Spring 2021

Ingrid Medeiros at Christian Siriano Spring 2021; Image: Imaxtree

Sadly, plus-size representation dipped from last season. For Spring 2021, there were only 12 plus-size model appearances. That’s down from 27 for Fall 2020. And way down from Spring 2020 when a record 68 plus-size models took part.

New York Fashion Week Spring 2021

And those 12 appearances were only spread across five shows. Alva Claire, Kimberly Drew and Precious Okoyomon were cast by Collina Strada. Ingrid Medeiros, Kylie Frink, Lauren Chan (who also popped up at Veronica Beard) and Sabina Karlsson walked for Christian Siriano. Over at Christian Cowan it was Jari Jones and Rachel Cargle. Maya Finoh for Chromat and Paloma Elsesser for Eckhaus Latta finish off the list.

The good news? A majority of plus-size castings (9 out of 12) went to models of color. Jones is also transgender so there was crossover appeal.

TRANSGENDER/NON-BINARY

New York Fashion Week Spring 2021

Indya Moore walking for Jason Wu Spring 2021; Image: Imaxtree

Transgender and non-binary models only saw a slight uptick in representation for Spring 2021. The total rose from 10 for Fall 2020 to 11 in Spring 2021. Still, it pales in comparison to Spring 2020’s 36.

Aaron Philip represented Collina Strada. Amanda Lepore, Isis King, Jari Jones and Teddy Quinlivan were hired by Christian Cowan. Jason Wu tapped Ariel Nicholson and Indya Moore. R13 enlisted Ella Snyder, Kim Shui picked Fabiana Montenegro, Eckhaus Latta had Hari Nef and Maya Mones modeled for Chromat.

Three drag queens were also booked this season. Christian Cowan had Symone and Violet Chachki. Collina Strada hired West Dakota.

It was almost a 50/50 split between white and nonwhite models. Even more encouraging is the fact that Lepore also falls into the age category and Jones is a plus-size model.

AGE

New York Fashion Week Spring 2021

Helena Christensen modeling for Christian Cowan Spring 2021; Image: Imaxtree

Only four over 50 models were cast for Spring 2021. That’s way down from 10 just a season ago. Supermodel Helena Christensen modeled for Christian Cowan. As did Amanda Lepore and Susanne Bartsch. Collina Strada enlisted Kathleen Engman.

As if only four hires wasn’t depressing enough, all four were white. One positive? Lepore is also transgender.

MOST AND LEAST DIVERSE SHOWS

New York Fashion Week Spring 2021

Snow Xue Gao Spring 2021; Image: Imaxtree

We were pleasantly surprised to see one of last season’s least diverse shows move into the most diverse category. Cinq à Sept went from 24 percent for Fall 2020 to 100 percent for Spring 2021. Others reaching the 100 percent diversity mark include Adeam, Thakoon, Pamella Roland, Zero + Maria Cornejo, Bibhu Mohapatra, Chromat and Tomo Koizumi. With Thakoon, Pamella Roland and Zero + Maria Cornejo each only booking one model.

Perhaps more telling is the latest list of least diverse shows. Snow Xue Gao, Marina Moscone, Claudia Li, Bevza, Libertine, Dennis Basso, Nicholas K and Katie Gallagher opted for zero models of color.

In closing, only time will tell if the gains and losses of New York’s Spring 2021 season indicate any real change. One of the most encouraging signs? Two disabled models were cast. Emily Barker and Aaron Philip appeared for Collina Strada. But we’ll always have to associate the pandemic and civil unrest with this season so it may not fall in line with ones to come. We just have to remain positive and diligent to ensure real change occurs.

Additional reporting by Mark E.

Only women and non-binary models are included in this data. Models of color are categorized as those who are nonwhite or of mixed backgrounds.
