Year in Review: 16 Fashion Stories That Had Everyone Talking in 2019

This year was filled with some truly jaw-dropping headlines in the fashion industry. There were plenty of red carpet looks and new trends to fawn over, but that was just the start. Just consider Rihanna’s quest for world domination by adding a new luxe label to her Fenty empire. From major chains filing for bankruptcy to another round of designer musical chairs, sometimes it was hard to keep track of all the changes going on. We also suffered some losses, including the passing of Karl Lagerfeld.

Click through the slideshow above to see the fashion stories that defined 2019.

Adut Akech Sports an Upcycled Alexander McQueen Dress on Vogue Australia’s January 2020 Cover

Adut Akech had a monumental year. We just crowned the South Sudanese-Australian beauty 2019’s top cover model (alongside Gigi Hadid), she’s starred in advertising campaigns for Chanel, Fendi, Valentino and Miu Miu and strutted the runway for several big fashion houses during fashion month. And 2020 is already looking just as bright. Vogue Australia helps Adut start off the new year with a bang by putting her on its January 2020 cover. Posing before the lens of photographer Nathaniel Goldberg on location in Paris, Adut wears an upcycled Alexander McQueen dress picked by Jillian Davison for the joyous cover shot.

According to the majority of our forum members, Adut’s latest missed the mark. “It doesn’t look like Adut and there’s something very pedestrian about the overall cover. Maybe it’s the redesign, the garish yellow masthead or the dress, which looks secondhand. Maybe if she made direct eye contact it may have saved this,” critiqued Benn98.

“Hideous,” aracic chimed in.

“Awful, what a mess,” declared an underwhelmed jal718.

“I’m missing the strong eye contact, her hands and a cooler layout. It looks very pedestrian, but I love her face, smile, dress and the yellow for me kinda works, too,” said Bertrando3.

But the cover found a few fans. “I actually…love this? Her smile and that McQueen dress stand out in the greenery and I don’t mind the yellow masthead one bit,” commented dodencebt.

“What a gorgeous cover, wow. Love everything about it, it will stand out on the newsstands,” praised Miss Dalloway.

“Love it…it’s a great take on an Australian summer cover without the standard beachy hair bohemian girl,” noted samoanceleb.

“Warm, innocent, gorgeous,” Srdjan simply stated.

We’re Finally Getting a Closer Look at Hilary Duff’s Custom Jenny Packham Wedding Gown

A post shared by Hilary Duff (@hilaryduff) on

Hilary Duff and Matthew Koma exchanged vows over the weekend at their Los Angeles home. And now we’re finally getting a glimpse of the actress/singer’s custom wedding gown courtesy of Instagram and a behind-the-scenes Vogue video.

Hilary didn’t want an OTT puffy gown so she picked Jenny Packham to design her elegant, modern dress. Boasting cape-like sleeves that basically form a train at the back of the dress, a fishtail skirt, an open back and saddle shoulder pads, the dress was the perfect silhouette for a winter wedding, even if it took place in sunny L.A. The pièce de résistance? One hundred buttons in the back starting from the waist all the way down to the bottom of the hem. Anita Ko earrings and a diamond and pearl headband by Jennifer Behr (which would also work for New Year’s Eve) polished off the look.

Check out Hilary’s final dress fitting in the video below.

Year in Review: The Best (and Worst!) Magazine Covers of 2019

It’s been a crazy year for magazines. Glamour ditched print in favor of digital. Porter cut back on issues (but the mag’s set to make a biannual comeback in Spring 2020) and the U.K. edition of Marie Claire shut down completely. There were also lots of staff changes, like Justine Picardie leaving British Harper’s Bazaar and Anne Fulenwider departing American Marie Claire.

But 2019 wasn’t all doom and gloom. Back in March, we witnessed the relaunch of Vogue Greece and Vogue Hong Kong made its highly-anticipated debut. Sara Moonves made some welcome changes over at W, Radhika Jones finally started creating newsworthy covers of Vanity Fair and Edward Enninful continued to impress at the helm of British Vogue.

Of course, it’s the magazine’s front cover that can either make or break an issue. From Allure to Vogue Paris to American ELLE, we’ve reviewed everything the biggest titles had to offer this year.

Scroll through the slideshow above to see which magazine covers stood out from the rest, for all the right and wrong reasons.

Irina Shayk Delivers a Beautiful Vogue Japan February 2020 Cover

It’s absolutely crazy to think we haven’t rung in the new year yet and Vogue Japan is already dropping its February 2020 cover. After selecting dynamic duo Anok Yai and Grace Elizabeth for its January installment, the magazine welcomes back Irina Shayk for its latest shot on location in Iceland by photographer Giampaolo Sgura. Captured outdoors, the Russian beauty and now four-time Japanese Vogue cover star sports a look from Chanel’s Cruise 2020 collection picked by Patrick Mackie for the beautiful cover image.

Members of our forums were pleasantly surprised by Irina’s latest. “I like it! Mad about headscarf styling in general, blame it on the 60s. Plus, they’ve not gone the usual bombshell route with Irina and the backdrop looks stunning,” declared Benn98.

“Loving the romantic hues for February!” admired amby.

“I support any nonwhite background cover from Vogue Japan,” said chanelh.

In the same frame of mind was Hafyiez wafa: “Finally, no plain white background for Vogue Japan!”

“What! An actually decent Sgura cover? Feeling this new Vogue Japan!” admitted Miss Dalloway.

“I adore headscarf styling in fashion so I was instantly sold on this. The whole cover is a win, it’s truly beautiful,” praised aracic.

“A beautiful cover for a February issue! I love what Irina’s wearing and how the color of the masthead and text complements Giampaolo Sgura’s cover shot (which might be his best work in months, if not years),” wrote vogue28.

A New Documentary Shines a Light on the Final Six Months of Renowned Parisian Boutique Colette

A post shared by colette (@colette) on

Ah, Colette. Even if you’ve never been to Paris, you’ve probably heard of the infamous Parisian boutique that was far more than just a shopping destination. It was an institution. Nestled on the Rue Saint-Honoré, you could shop for the latest fashion collections or check out one of its many exhibitions or events (like a guest curation by Saint Laurent).

The shop shut its doors back in December 2017, much to the dismay of fashion addicts everywhere, but now you can relive the store’s final months thanks to a new hour-long documentary. Colette Mon Amour not only features its founder Colette Roussaux and her daughter Sarah Andelman, who served as the store’s creative director/head buyer, it includes interviews with several celebs like Virgil Abloh and Pharrell Williams about their experiences at the iconic boutique. It’s the next best thing to actually shopping at Colette in its heyday.

The Hugues Lawson-Body-directed documentary will be out next year.

Kate Moss Is the Face of Ermanno Scervino’s Spring 2020 Ad Campaign

Supermodels are everywhere right now, not that we’re complaining. Claudia Schiffer is currently on Vogue Russia, Gisele Bündchen graces Harper’s Bazaar Russia and now Kate Moss has just been unveiled as the new face of Ermanno Scervino. The Italian fashion label doesn’t get the recognition it deserves on our forums, but we’ve been keeping a close eye on its campaigns since Luigi & Iango started shooting the ads (featuring Edie Campbell for Spring 2019 and Doutzen Kroes for Fall 2019). For Spring 2020, the photographic duo captures Kate in the studio for the cool black and white images.

But it was the use of Photoshop that became the topic of conversation on our forums. “At this point, I’d just hire a CGI artist instead of spending the money on studio time, a model, a photographer, etc.,” called out tigerrouge.

“Your new anti-aging cream: Photoshop,” mocked Nymphaea.

“Gorgeous CGI Kate! Fake, but gorgeous nonetheless,” said russianelf.

[ Not a tFS forum member yet? Click here to join! ]

“A clear example of how good use of Photoshop can make a picture work!” echoed apple.

“At this point it feels like I’ve seen these exact images of Kate Moss thousands of times before,” Nomar complained.

Lola701 shared the same sentiment: “There’s nothing more boring than a campaign of Kate just being Kate… I would love to see her do Prada, Vuitton, maybe Versace again. Anything that doesn’t try to emulate her personal style.”

“I swear these could be outtakes from her Alberta Ferretti Fall 2016 campaign and no one would notice. It’s too similar! Hair over the right side of her face, pretty much the same poses in black and white…damn. I mean, I’ll always be here for some classic Kate Moss, but this is literally the art of doing nothing,” aracic pointed out.

The NYFW Fall 2020 Schedule Just Dropped and There Are Some Notable Names Missing

Tommy Hilfiger at his Fall 2019 show; Image: Imaxtree

The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) just revealed the Fall 2020 lineup for New York Fashion Week and there are a couple of names not on the list. Namely Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger. According to WWD, the team over at Ralph Lauren hasn’t gotten around to announcing just where or when its Spring 2020 show will take place (remember, the brand is a season behind). And Hilfiger will supposedly reveal his plans in the new year.

As to the brands that will be showing in the Big Apple come February, Monse will open the week on February 7. Marc Jacobs will close out the week on February 12. And there’s obviously a lot going on between.

Check out the full schedule here and then start marking your calendar. We’ve already got our eyes on Oscar de la Renta, Proenza Schouler, Anna Sui and Gabriela Hearst.

Edie Campbell Does Minimalism Right on Vogue Spain’s January 2020 Cover

We love a good OTT cover, but there’s also a time and place for minimalism on magazines. As we enter a new year (not to mention a whole new decade), Vogue Spain decides less is more for its January 2020 installment. The Spanish fashion bible has been riding a wave of success lately, delivering a plethora of dazzling covers starring Karlie Kloss, Birgit Kos, Dua Lipa, Vittoria Ceretti along with Irina Shayk and Adriana Lima. Now the mag starts the new year off right with Edie Campbell wearing Prada for the chic and clean cover shot captured by photographer Sølve Sundsbø.

Vogue España January 2020 : Edie Campbell by Solve Sundsbo

IMAGE: VOGUE.ES

Our forum members loved the mag’s stripped down approach. “So elegant, simple and subdued. It’s so eye-catching! Edie looks terrific. Vogue Spain is on a bit of a roll,” praised KINGofVERSAILLES.

“Love everything about it, even the hair. This is 90s done right. Just last month Karlie brought the drama so I’m perfectly fine with something a bit plain for January,” approved Benn98.

[ Not a tFS forum member yet? Click here to join! ]

“Nothing groundbreaking, but gorgeous nonetheless. Sometimes less really is more cause despite being a simple studio shot, it’s one of the best covers of the month. It’s very 90s indeed…” noted aracic.

“So simple yet so incredibly beautiful and Edie is just gorgeous here. What a great clean, fresh way to start 2020!” heralded justaguy.

“I love this! The color palette is divine, the grays and soft peach are so beautiful together. Always love seeing Edie and I appreciate the minimal styling paired with the grungy, messy hair,” raved Blayne266.

But not everyone was feeling it. “It looks like she just got out of bed, had a shower and then put on whatever she could find,” an underwhelmed Nomar critiqued.

Bertrando3 wasn’t overjoyed with the outcome, either. “What the HELL is this? Can’t believe it’s a Vogue cover.”

Minimalism done right or wrong? Have your say here.

Report: 2019 Was Not a Good Year for Diversity on Magazine Covers

US Vogue November 2019 : Rihanna by Ethan James Green

Vogue November 2019: Rihanna by Ethan James Green; Image: Vogue.com

This time last year, we were thrilled to report that diversity on the covers of 51 of the top domestic, international and independent fashion magazines had improved significantly from 2017 to 2018. In 2018, a record 37.7 percent of cover castings went to people of color, up from 32.5 percent the year before. That’s a considerable — 5.2 percent — increase. Sadly, from 2018 to 2019 there was no such progress.

In fact, with the exception of age representation, which plateaued, diversity on magazine covers is down across the board.

RACE

Vanity Fair October 2019 : Lupita Nyong’o by Jackie Nickerson

Vanity Fair October 2019: Lupita Nyong’o by Jackie Nickerson; IMAGE: VANITYFAIR.COM

Of the 745 cover appearances we reviewed this year — again across 51 leading fashion publications — we found that 275, or 36.9 percent, were people of color, a small but nonetheless disappointing 0.8 percent dip from the aforementioned 37.7 percent seen in 2018.

MOST AND LEAST DIVERSE

Vogue India (100 percent) and Vogue Taiwan (100 percent) featured the most racial diversity — Vogue Taiwan for the fifth year running. These were closely followed by i-D (83 percent, one non-binary person), Vogue Arabia (80 percent, one woman age 50-plus) and Vogue Mexico (79 percent, including two plus-size women, one of them over age 50).

Next came Vogue Hong Kong (75 percent, including 54-year-old actress and singer Carina Lau), Porter (67 percent), Vogue Brazil (64 percent, one woman age 50-plus), Vogue Thailand (62 percent) and T: The New York Times Style Magazine (60 percent).

V Magazine (57 percent with one plus-size woman), Vogue U.K. (57 percent with one plus-size woman, one trans woman and four women age 50 or above), Marie Claire U.S. (56 percent) and Vogue Japan (52 percent, one woman above age 50) rounded out the list.

We’d like to take a minute to spotlight Vogue U.K. and ELLE U.S. Led by Edward Enninful and Nina Garcia, respectively, the two publications featured better across-the-board diversity than most.

Before 2017, Vogue U.K. went 14 years with only six nonwhite solo cover stars; this year it hired 16 out of 28 nonwhite women, not to mention its first (publicly) transgender cover star. (For the mag’s full list of accomplishments, see above.)

While only 35 percent of ELLE U.S.’s 2019 cover stars had minority heritage, the magazine did hire women from every diversity category: three age 50 or above, two plus-size and, like Vogue U.K., the mag picked its first transgender cover star.

Vogue Germany July 2019 : Birgit Kos, Luna Bijl & Vittoria Ceretti by Peter Lindbergh

Vogue Germany July 2019: Birgit Kos, Luna Bijl and Vittoria Ceretti by Peter Lindbergh; IMAGE: VOGUE.DE

On the opposite end of the spectrum, two of the publications we reviewed — Vogue Poland and The Gentlewoman — featured not a single person of color. Vogues Czech Republic (7 percent), Paris (8 percent), Portugal (8 percent), Germany (10 percent) and Turkey (10 percent) also put out startlingly white covers.

Although, to be fair, a handful of the above did make an effort to showcase other forms of diversity. The Gentlewoman hired two 50-plus cover stars, as did Vogues Portugal, Germany and Czech Republic. And the latter featured trans model Finn Buchanan on its November edition.

What’s more, Vogue Portugal actually made history — and headlines — with its April issue, which starred South African model Thando Hopa, the first woman with albinism to appear on the cover of Vogue. The publication also tapped (plus-size) comedian Celeste Barber for its August cover. So, despite its failure at racial inclusion, we can’t totally condemn the Suzy Menkes-led mag.

PLUS-SIZE

US Elle February 2019 : Ashley Graham by Carin Backoff

US Elle February 2019: Ashley Graham by Carin Backoff; IMAGE: COURTESY OF ELLE

“Plus-size” women — a group that has been sorely underrepresented on newsstands for years — landed 15 (2.01 percent) cover appearances in 2019, three fewer than the year before (2.42 percent). So body diversity on magazine covers took a slight (0.41 percent) hit.

There is, without question, a lot more work to be done on the size inclusivity front. Still, the magazine industry has made definite strides in the right direction. In 2017, we counted just eight (1.02 percent) non-sample-size cover stars; in 2016, only six (0.88 percent).

As to how these numbers stack up against the most recent runway and ad campaign stats, size representation was up last fashion month from 0.69 percent (50 plus-size castings) in Fall 2019 to 1.16 percent (86 castings) in Spring 2020. Meanwhile, body diversity in the seasonal ads fell from 2.08 percent (11 castings) in Spring 2019 to 1.94 percent (9 castings) in Fall 2019. So, compared to other legs of the fashion industry, fashion publications did well in terms of size inclusion in that they at least passed the 2 percent mark.

Number of plus-size, 50 and over and transgender models on fashion magazine covers

InStyle, Vogue Mexico and ELLE U.S. saw the most body diversity this year with two non-sample-size cover stars each. Actors Melissa McCarthy and Rebel Wilson covered InStyle in February and May, respectively. Vogue Mexico tapped model Paloma Elsesser for its April issue. In October, for its 20th anniversary issue, the publication released six separate covers, each featuring Latinx women known for their stereotype-breaking work in the fields of entertainment, sports, the culinary arts and so on. Among them was Abigail Mendoza, an acclaimed Zapotec chef. As for ELLE U.S., model and podcaster Ashley Graham covered the glossy’s February issue; singer/songwriter/rapper/flutist Lizzo starred on its music-themed October edition.

Speaking of which: within the category, eight-time Grammy nominee Lizzo racked up the most covers of the year. The “Truth Hurts” singer fronted four titles: Vogue U.K., LOVE, V Magazine and, as mentioned, ELLE U.S. Graham followed with three covers (AllureHarper’s Bazaar U.K. and ELLE U.S.). Trailing her was McCarthy with two cover appearances (InStyle and WSJ. Magazine).

Looking at intersectionality, 7 of the 15 size-inclusive covers went to women of color, one to an indigenous Mexican woman over the age of 50 (Mendoza). The year had no openly transgender or non-binary plus-size cover stars.

AGE

US Instyle September 2019 : Julianne Moore by Phil Poynter

US InStyle September 2019: Julianne Moore by Phil Poynter; IMAGE: INSTYLE.COM

As stated, women age 50 and above were the only group that didn’t suffer a loss in cover representation, but they didn’t make any gains. This year’s covers featured 41 (5.5 percent) women in the age group, matching 2018’s number, which itself was only a minor (0.5 percent) improvement over the 5 percent seen in both 2017 and 2016.

Put plainly, age diversity on magazine covers stayed mostly static for the fourth year in a row. Even so, women in the 50 and over range continue to land more magazine covers than any category outside of race — another four-year trend.

As is typically the case, this year’s magazine covers far outdid the most recent runways and ad campaigns in terms of age representation. (The runways in particular are notoriously age-averse; women age 50 and over are consistently the least-represented group.) Even more discouragingly, we saw little to no progress on the age diversity front in all three arenas.

At the Spring 2020 shows, a total of 39 models (0.53 percent) age 50 and above walked, up from 36 (0.49 percent) the prior season. Fall 2019’s campaigns, meanwhile, featured 10 models (2.16 percent) in the age group, down from Spring 2019’s 15 (2.84 percent).

Once again, Nicole Kidman, 52, racked up the most covers of any woman in this age bracket — six, including Vanity Fair, InStyle, ELLE U.S., Vogue Australia and W (twice). Following her with three covers was Christy Turlington, 50, who covered Vogues U.K., Mexico and Brazil.

Vogue Australia December 2019 : Nicole Kidman by Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin

Vogue Australia December 2019: Nicole Kidman by Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin; IMAGE: VOGUE.COM.AU

Tied for third place with two covers each were Céline Dion, 51 (CR Fashion Book and ELLE U.S.), Cindy Sherman, 65 (The Gentlewoman and WSJ. Magazine), Demi Moore, 57 (Harper’s Bazaar U.S. and WSJ. Magazine), Julianne Moore, 59 (InStyle and WSJ. Magazine), Laura Dern, 52 (InStyle and Vanity Fair) and Sharon Stone, 61 (Allure and Vogue Portugal).

The rest of the set — which includes legends like Björk, Dolly Parton, Isabella Rossellini, Jane Fonda, Madonna, Margaret Atwood, Miuccia Prada, Pamela Anderson, Salma Hayek, Tilda Swinton and Kris Jenner — landed one cover apiece.

InStyle and Vogue U.K. led in terms of age diversity. Both hired four cover stars age 50 or above: Kidman, Dern, Renée Zellweger and Julianne Moore at InStyle; Madonna, Turlington, Fonda and Hayek at Vogue U.K. WSJ. Magazine, which was responsible for four of last year’s 50-and-over cover appearances, again held up its end, casting Sherman, Demi Moore and Julianne Moore. ELLE U.S. also hired three women age 50 or above (Kidman, Dion and Parton) as did W (Angela Bassett once, Kidman twice).

Finally, we’d like to take a moment to acknowledge the stunning lack of racial inclusion within this category. The vast majority — 37 of 41 or 90.2 percent(!) — of 2019’s age-inclusive covers went to white women. (Although, to reiterate, Vogue Mexico did feature one nonwhite, plus-size woman over the age of 50, Abigail Mendoza.)

TRANSGENDER/NON-BINARY

US Elle June 2019 : Indya Moore by Zoey Grossman

US Elle June 2019: Indya Moore by Zoey Grossman; IMAGE: ELLE.COM

From 2018 to 2019, the number of openly male-to-female transgender and non-binary persons featured on covers fell from 10 (1.34 percent) to seven (0.94 percent). As a result, they were the least represented group, as has always been the case with magazine covers.

This decline is all the more striking given that 2018 was something of a landmark season for gender inclusivity — not only did the number of trans and non-binary cover stars reach an all-time high, it more than tripled from the previous year.

Needless to say, while transgender and non-binary representation in the fashion industry has improved in recent years, it remains low across the board: 46 (0.62 percent) of all Spring 2020 runway castings went to “out” trans or non-binary models, down 0.15 percent from the 56 recorded in Fall 2019; six (1.29 percent) Fall 2019 campaign models belonged to the category, up from two (0.38 percent) the season before. Considering the ever-fluctuating numbers, it’s difficult to say how much real progress is being made.

But the news isn’t all bad: publishers are doing better at addressing tokenism. Whereas back in 2016, four of the year’s five gender-inclusive covers featured actress Hari Nef, this year — for the second year in a row — there was no repetition among the cover choices.

Laverne Cox covered Vogue U.K.’s almighty September issue and in so doing became the magazine’s first transgender cover star. (Again, hat tip to Edward Enninful.) Pose’s Indya Moore did ELLE U.S. the same honor in June. British model Finn Buchanan fronted Vogue Czech Republic’s November edition; Filipinx model Noah Carlos was one of three models to appear on i-D’s Winter 2019 “The Get Up Stand Up” issue. And (non-binary) Björk collaborator Hungry posed alongside top model Rianne Van Rompaey for the cover of WSJ. Magazine’s September fashion issue.

Of the publications we reviewed, Dazed was the only title to hire more than one trans or non-binary cover star. The glossy’s multi-cover Spring 2019 issue — a celebration of “infinite forms of identity, and the creativity of LGBTQIA+ communities everywhere” — featured model Ariel Nicholson and Euphoria’s Hunter Schafer.

An aside: This year Paper, which in 2018 featured the most trans or non-binary cover stars of any title, also hired two trans women (Schafer and Teddy Quinlivan) albeit for digital covers, which we do not consider in our data.

As for the titles that embraced multiple forms of diversity: Vogue U.K., ELLE U.S. and i-D each hired one trans or non-binary person of color (Cox, Moore and Carlos, respectively).

TOP MODELS

Despite the disappointing declines seen in the categories of race, size and gender diversity and the lack of progress in age inclusivity, 2019’s 10 most-booked cover stars were a noticeably more diverse group than those of years past.

Half of the top 10 were women with minority heritage (although two of those five were the admittedly white-passing Hadid sisters). And, in a rare turn of events, one woman over the age of 50 made the cut.

What’s more, at the head of the pack were a black woman and a mixed-race woman. South Sudanese-Australian model Adut Akech and Dutch-Palestinian-American model Gigi Hadid racked up the most covers of the year with nine each.

Akech fronted Allure, Dazed and Vogues Germany, Australia, Paris, U.K., Italia and Japan (the latter twice); the elder Hadid covered ELLE U.S., LOVE and several international Vogue editions (Brazil, Germany, Mexico, Arabia, Czech Republic, Hong Kong and Italia).

Second place was a four-way tie between South Sudanese model Anok Yai, Bella Hadid, Dutch model Birgit Kos and Russian model Irina Shayk, each of whom landed seven covers. In third place, with six covers apiece, were modeling legend Naomi Campbell (age 49), Nicole Kidman (age 52), American model Rebecca Leigh Longendyke and Dutch model Rianne Van Rompaey.

Unfortunately, no transgender, non-binary or plus-size models made the top 10. Still, the increasing popularity of cover stars nearing or above the age of 50 is encouraging.

LOOKING FORWARD

So what does all this mean? It’s no secret that the media world is undergoing some major changes. At a time when heavy hitters like Glamour, Teen Vogue and Nylon are ceasing print operations and digital covers — which, as Fashionista explains, “[allow] brands to play with formatting, cast less traditional cover stars and tackle more timely subject matter” — are growing ever more popular, does what we see on the newsstands even carry that much weight?

Whether it does or not, it’s unsettling that in 2019 diversity and inclusion appeared to be somewhat less of a priority to publishers than the year before. Still, bright spots like Laverne Cox’s Vogue U.K. cover, an age-inclusive most-booked list and the year’s many glossy Lizzo sightings give us hope for the coming decade.

With additional reporting by Mark E.

For the purpose of this report, “model” is anyone who appears on a cover, even if modeling is not their profession. Models of color are categorized as those who are nonwhite or of mixed backgrounds.

28 New Year’s Eve Makeup Ideas We’re Stealing From the Runways

Images: Imaxtree

You’re all set on the New Year’s Eve wardrobe front, from the perfect party dress to the ideal glitzy footwear. Now it’s time to shift the focus to your makeup. Sure, you could go the standard route with just a swipe of bright red lipstick or glitter eyeshadow, but where’s the fun in that?

This year, we’re all about thinking outside the box. Instead of overdosing on glitter, try concentrating the sparkle on just your eyes, cheeks or lips. You can also opt for holographic highlights for a subtler shine. And when it comes to lipstick, skip your go-to lip color in favor of darker shades or a gilded effect.

Check out the makeup ideas above that are sure to make an impression as you count down to 2020.

While you’re probably zeroing in on your favorite festive lipstick shade, Gucci wants you to reconsider those satin and glitter finishes that are so popular this time of year. The luxury house just dropped a line of marvelously matte lipsticks.

The Rouge à Lèvres Mat collection boasts 28 shades inspired by “iconic Hollywood movies and characters from the gilded era.” There’s a wide range of reds and nudes along with a daring green that’s perfect for holiday parties. These lipsticks aren’t harsh and heavy like other matte formulas. Each has a velvety feel and delivers strong pigment thanks to gelling waxes. All the January 2020 Magazine Covers We Loved and Hated

January is often an off month for magazines since they usually don’t go all out when it comes to their covers. But there were some covers that managed to impress. We were treated to several pregnant cover stars, including Ashley Graham and Petra Nemcova, and lots of kids. But the fashion was a bit more hit and miss. There were truly atrocious accessories (we’re talking iridescent beetles), pajamas and bows everywhere you looked.

Check out the slideshow above for a look at the best and worst January 2020 covers.

Gisele Bündchen Helps Harper’s Bazaar Russia Start 2020 on a High Note With Two Gorgeous January Covers

You can always rely on Gisele Bündchen for a good cover and it’s almost sinful that the Brazilian bombshell has only covered Vogue twice in 2019 (Vogue Germany and Vogue Paris). But Harper’s Bazaar Russia decided to kick off 2020 right by having the supermodel front its January issue, much to the delight of our forums. Photographed by Kevin O’Brien and styled by Maleeka Moss, Gisele does what she does best on a pair of perfect covers. In cover one (below), she sits on the studio floor sporting a laid-back look while still serving full-on glam. For cover two (after the jump), she gives us a sultry, over-the-shoulder stare.

Our forum members loved the outcome. “This woman is amazing,” declared caioherrero.

“Magnificent! You can never go wrong with Gisele,” proclaimed aracic.

“She always gets the job done,” Lola701 chimed in.

“Fabulous! The composition and choice of cover image reminds me of Harper’s Bazaar in the early 2000s with the first cover, but the second is clearly the standout of the two. The close-up of Gisele is perfection personified, genuinely head over heels for it,” raved vogue28.

Also quick to show Gisele some love was mikel: “The second cover is stunning!”

“Wow, second cover is awesome, what great makeup,” approved apple.

“Beautiful covers! The close-up is just wow,” echoed Srdjan.

Rebecca Leigh Longendyke Lands a Starring Role on Vogue Italia’s December 2019 Cover

Vogue Italia hasn’t exactly been our go-to down at the newsstand this year. Not even covers of Amber Valletta, Anok Yai, Gigi Hadid and Claudia Schiffer have sufficed. Now the magazine reveals its final offering of the year featuring January 2019’s cover girl Rebecca Leigh Longendyke. The American stunner stars in Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott’s family drama wearing Celine and Bulgari jewelry courtesy of Katy England. She’s joined by a handful of others (including supermodel Nadja Auermann) in the dramatic cover image.

The cover actually received a few rave reviews. “One of their better covers for sure. Very intriguing. Rebecca looks stunning here,” declared Marc10.

“Like a movie poster. I’m intrigued. I like it,” Lax89 chimed in.

Nomar was also a fan: “I love the satirical vibe of this. It looks really good.”

Although the cover wasn’t for everyone. “Honestly, would never in my life be able to tell this was shot by Mert and Marcus,” proclaimed dontbeadrag.

“No one could,” replied Melancholybaby. “Looks like the poster of a film where a family gathers for a Christmas meal/some sort of celebration and all sorts of drama and revelations ensue. And why is Nadja playing second fiddle to these nobodies?”

“I love Rebecca and she looks gorgeous, but the cover just isn’t working. It’s ugly, it’s messy, the people behind look so cheap and horrible, especially the girl in tartan that looks like your goth cousin who hates everyone. It’s all way too Vogue Ukraine for me,” complained aracic.

Are you a fan? Check out what else the issue has to offer and join the conversation here.

Nicole Kidman Looks ‘Stiff’ on Tatler’s Questionable January 2020 Cover

Throughout 2019, Nicole Kidman has been a fixture down on newsstands. The Aussie actress has covered everything from Vanity Fair to InStyle to Vogue Australia to W over the last 12 months and we expect the trend to continue in 2020. The Bombshell star starts the new year off by making a regal return to the cover of Tatler for January (her last appearance served up plenty of vintage glamour on the title’s July 2018 cover). Photographed by Jack Waterlot and styled by Sophie Pera, Nicole looks like she’s in an 18th century painting wearing a top hat from Lock & Co. teamed with a blazer and white shirt from Fendi in the stylized cover shot.

But something was way off. “Looks so stiff!” proclaimed Srdjan.

“Very stiff!” mikel chimed in.

“Welcome to Madame Tussauds,” joked jaybee0605.

“Oh my! Just take the picture and show the lady where the bathroom is! I mean come on, Kidman used to be one of the best cover stars, but I guess this is what happens when you do your 300th cover…you’re just over it!” declared Miss Dalloway.

“The devil works hard, but Nicole’s publicist works harder,” added MON.

A handful of forum members liked what they saw. “I doubt that it was deliberate, but I like the way she looks as artificial as one of the stiff figures you’d see in historical art, like she’s just stepped out of the painting behind her,” said tigerrouge.

“Stiff, tense, awkward, but I still love how perfect this is for Tatler. Everything except Nicole’s face is a plus, love the background, the styling and how each element complements one another. I sure am keen to see more!” shared vogue28.

Check out Nicole’s accompanying cover feature and share your thoughts here.

Stunning Pearl Rings a la Emma Stone You Don’t Have to Get Engaged to Enjoy

A post shared by @ davemccary on

Celebrity engagements are nothing new. In 2019 alone, Jennifer Lopez said “yes” to Alex Rodriguez, Orlando Bloom asked Katy Perry for her hand, Scarlett Johansson agreed to marry Colin Jost and Emma Stone announced her engagement to Dave McCary. While these are all high-profile couples, Emma’s engagement grabbed lots of headlines all thanks to her ring.

Her fiancé popped the question with a dazzling pearl ring. Pearls are once again popular among the fashion set with pearl jewelry and even hair accessories currently trending. And while Emma’s pearl stunner probably cost a pretty penny, you don’t have to break the bank to slip one on your finger(s).

Not convinced? Well, we went ahead and rounded up a variety of pearl rings that fit every style and budget.
