Year in Review: Top 10 Fashion Stories of 2020

What a year. From the pandemic to the quest for social justice, 2020 was a lot. Now as we get ready to welcome 2021, it’s time to look back at all the top 2020 fashion stories that really left their mark.

The pandemic changed the way magazines approached content and covers and forced designers to rethink the traditional runway show. Red carpet events were canceled or moved online with varying degrees of success. Due to our changing way of life, fashion-forward face masks and loungewear became hot commodities.

The Black Lives Matter movement also impacted the industry. It sparked a reckoning in the publishing world and led to more inclusive ad campaigns. At least for the time being.

Other notable headlines include designers both leaving and signing on to fashion houses, Raf Simons’ first Prada show along with Harry Styles wearing a Gucci dress on the cover of Vogue. And Kamala Harris wowing in suffragette white for her history-making acceptance speech.

Read on to discover the top 10 2020 fashion stories we’re still talking about.

Natasha Poly, Irina Shayk and Joan Smalls Join Forces for Ermanno Scervino’s Spring 2021 Campaign

Photographic duo Luigi & Iango definitely loves supermodels. Whether the pair is shooting Kate Moss along with Amber Valletta for Mônot or a supermodel extravaganza for Vogue Japan, the outcome is usually outstanding. The duo’s latest project absolutely stays true to form. Luigi & Iango captures Ermanno Scervino’s 20th anniversary campaign featuring Natasha Poly, Irina Shayk and Joan Smalls as the faces of the Spring 2021 collection.

“I’m getting Balmain, Alberta Ferretti and Dolce & Gabbana more than Ermanno Scervino,” voiced Summer Day.

“You get a cast like this and you Photoshop them into oblivion…” mathiaskatz pointed out.

“Not necessarily a bad set of images. This would’ve been an amazing Balmain campaign five years ago. Or a stunning Cavalli campaign 10 years ago,” critiqued an undoubtedly disappointed mikel.

But clearly not everyone felt the same way. “I love Irina but I feel like Joan and Natasha are enough. That solo shot of Joan is beautiful,” raved Krystalblue006.

“Natasha and Joan were enough, I love Irina but I think she looks like an extra model,” echoed zacatecas570.

“It’s classic Luigi & Iango and everything works perfectly and while I do prefer studio shoots, I cannot help but love this. As much as I am a diehard Natasha Poly fan, Irina Shayk and Joan Smalls hold their own just as much. Zero complaints over this!” declared an obviously content vogue28.

Year in Review: The Best (and Worst!) Magazine Covers of 2020

This year was definitely an interesting one for our favorite glossies. It kicked off with news of Glenda Bailey departing Harper’s Bazaar after 19 years. Then the pandemic hit forcing magazines to get creative when it came to producing content. Vogue Paris’ Emmanuelle Alt and InStyle‘s Laura Brown rose to the occasion. Other editors also stepped things up. Edward Enninful thanked frontline workers with a trio of British Vogue covers, while American Vogue‘s Anna Wintour delivered a symbolic cover featuring a previously unpublished Irving Penn photo.

Social injustice also had an impact on glossies this year. Two black artists illustrated covers for American Vogue‘s all-important September issue. Meanwhile, British Vogue‘s September cover focused on activism.

We’re also pleased to see diversity increase across all categories this year. There was a record-breaking bump in racial inclusivity. Along with smaller spikes in size, age and gender representation. Bottom line? The numbers are encouraging. But there’s real concern that these hikes are only temporary. We’ll have to wait and see what 2021 brings.

Now that 2020 is coming to a close, it’s time to look back at its highs and lows. Here are the best and worst 2020 magazine covers.

The Best Black Baguette Bags to Gift Yourself

Everyone needs a little black dress hanging in their closet. The same can definitely be said for a black bag. It’s chic, goes with literally anything and is never out of fashion. The best of the bunch? No question: black baguette bags.

But not all black baguette bags are created equal. We like ours bursting with personality. Lots of gloss to go with dressier ensembles. A croc pattern to enhance our loungewear staples. A chain accent for when we want a bit of bling. And when we’re in the mood for pronounced texture, ruching or quilting to really make our bag pop.

We’re also more than willing to embrace different shapes. Especially geometric takes. From Coperni’s baguette inspired by Apple’s airplane mode to Elleme’s dip silhouette, 2021 is all about trying new things.

Prices range from under $30 to designer fare clearly worth the investment. Here are the best black baguette bags to carry everywhere in the new year.

Vogue Spain Picks Penélope Cruz as Its First 2021 Cover Star

We’ve enjoyed Vogue Spain immensely throughout 2020. The Spanish fashion bible has delivered an array of stunning covers starring everyone from Hailey Bieber to Ana de Armas to Amber Valletta. Then there was that unforgettable Indya Moore cover. Despite the fact Eugenia de la Torriente is leaving, 2021 still looks bright for Spanish Vogue. Especially with Penélope Cruz leading the way. Appearing on the January issue, the actress photographs like a dream (per usual) wearing Chanel picked by Juan Cebrian before the lens of Nico Bustos.

IMAGE: VOGUE.ES

“Always elated to see Penélope grace the cover of any fashion magazine, but Vogue Spain always feels just so right. The cover image itself is gorgeous, but I am incredibly bias toward Penélope and believe she just can do NO wrong,” raved vogue28.

“I think it’s one of my favorite covers of Spanish Vogue. This one is a soft, pretty image of Penélope. I like the simple styling…” admired Bertrando3.

Blizzard8358 simply used the word “stunning” to describe the cover.

But not everyone agreed. “I actually like it, but it’s more of a YouTube teaser than a Vogue cover,” critiqued MON.

“Doesn’t look like her. I feel as if I just saw her on the cover,” voiced an uninterested Summer Day.

“Nice picture of Penélope, but the twos in 2021 just drag your eyes straight to them,” justaguy pointed out.

“NO to the hair color, the nude lips, the rosé font, the overplayed Lady Godiva concept… I know it’s Penélope Cruz and that they’ve shot her so much that they’ve run out of ideas, but then get someone else to shoot her. The weak link of course is Nico Bustos,” disapproved Benn98.

See more from Penélope’s cover shoot and join the conversation here.

10 Best Dark Spot Correctors to Even Out Your Skin Tone

Let’s talk about uneven skin tone. Whether you’re suffering from melasma, genetic freckles, age spots or sun damage, there’s no escaping your skin changing. But before we tell you how to solve said problems, we first need to enlighten you as to why your skin is transitioning.

It’s this little thing called hyperpigmentation caused by the production of melanin. Once skin cells realize they’re in danger, melanin increases to protect the damaged skin. Since those with darker skin have more melanin, they have a higher chance of getting dark spots. While acne scars are created from inflamed skin during a breakout, age spots and melasma occur after spending lots of time in the sun. But fun in the sun isn’t what it’s cracked up to be when you’re left with pigment issues. While wearing sunscreen every day is essential, dark spot correctors can also help.

So we’ve gathered 10 of the best dark spot correctors around. Whether you’re battling melasma, age spots or ghosts from pimples past, these correctors will help return your skin to its former glory.

Banish the Cold-Weather Blues With Winter Florals

Brock Collection Fall 2020; Image: Imaxtree

There are many things we’re forced to abandon once the snow falls. Think skin-baring crop tops, miniskirts and tank tops (unless you’re willing to layer all of these into oblivion). But floral patterned pieces aren’t on the list. While florals are usually reserved for spring, what better way to brighten up dreary winter days (and nights) than with some flower power?

There are some conditions, though. Spring florals are always vivid and sunny, but winter florals are typically more moody and alluring. You can rock bright shades, but they should be tempered with darker floral patterns or the reverse, vibrant flowers backed by a black or navy background.

The Fall 2020 runways showcased winter florals in new arrangements. Brock Collection took a more romantic approach offering floral patterns with a Victorian twist. Tory Burch brought things into a new era with an Edwardian-style jacket boasting puffed sleeves and delicate buttons. Ganni gave us a colorful sheer shirt ideal for wearing under blazers or letting the collar poke out of sweaters or even sweatshirts.

Now’s the time to take a look through your closet to see if any of your florals fit the season. If your wardrobe is lacking, here are some stylish winter floral pieces that will freshen things up.

Heidi Klum and Her Daughter Leni Team Up for Vogue Germany’s January/February 2021 Cover

Model mothers and their daughters posing together on the cover of Vogue isn’t exactly new. Cindy Crawford and Kaia Gerber were all smiles on the cover of Vogue Paris, while Kate and Lila Moss fronted Vogue Italia. Now Heidi Klum and her daughter Leni grace the cover of Vogue Germany’s January/February 2021 edition. Following a year full of hit or miss covers, the duo color coordinate via Versace with Heidi planting a sweet kiss on the cheek of her 16-year-old offspring captured by Chris Colls.

The cover divided our forums. “I’ve about had it with the overt nepotism. Get these children off of Vogue,” demanded KINGofVERSAILLES.

“I sense a new nepotism model surfacing,” said Toni Ahlgren.

“I am SO, SO, SO tired of these celebrity children. Please let it stop,” pleaded [Piece Of Me].

“I’ve lost count of all the mothers and their mini-mes we’ve seen in the past month or two, they seem to be everywhere suddenly,” aracic pointed out.

But not everyone was dissatisfied. “I really like this,” admitted liv4beauty.

“I quite like it. Love the bold colors and composition,” echoed mikel.

“Nepotism aside, I really like the colors. Everything recently has been so drab or an eyesore and the color coordination here was done remarkably well. I’ve always had a soft spot for Heidi… She barely has any Vogue covers so I’m more than happy to see her on Germany’s considering it’s one of their better covers in the past year,” expressed marsnoop2.

All the January 2021 Magazine Covers We Loved and Hated

After reviewing the 2020 covers of major magazines, we discovered a substantial increase in diversity. But we’re worried that rise is only temporary. And by the looks of the January 2021 covers that have dropped thus far, we’re right.

So far the vast majority of January 2021 issues feature white cover subjects. There isn’t a lot of diversity when it comes to size and gender, either. On the plus side, ELLE U.K. delivered a beautiful and groundbreaking shot of an embracing Aweng and Alexus Ade-Chuol.

For most of 2020 mags had to get creative with their covers. But the new year is bringing back classic photoshoots. Unfortunately, many shots showcase styling better suited to summer than winter. We’re also gifted great shots of modeling legends Twiggy and Kate Moss. We’ll just have to see what February 2021 brings.

See which covers made an impression, both good and bad, in the slideshow above.

Kristina O’Neill undoubtedly has a knack for knocking it out of the park. Want proof? Just look at the amazing covers WSJ. Magazine delivered over the last 12 months. We’re big fans of its covers featuring Adut Akech, Nicole Kidman, Doutzen Kroes along with Naomi Osaka. And the mag definitely keeps on giving. For the December 2020/January 2021 issue Regina King serves as cover star stunning in the striking shot captured by Alexandra Leese.

“Gorgeous portrait! She’s got a great shot at becoming one of only a few women — and the first black woman — to ever be nominated for best director at the Oscars. Hopefully more covers follow,” exclaimed KINGofVERSAILLES.

“Regina is absolutely gorgeous and I’m so happy she landed this cover,” proclaimed bluestar.

Summer Day is absolutely happy with the outcome: “I’ve loved Regina since I was a kid and I’m glad that she’s getting recognition from the fashion crowd.”

“This is such a beautiful cover, feels far more relevant and worthy of the paper it’s printed on as opposed to what we’ve seen at Bazaar over recent months,” said vogue28.

Forum member aracic obviously shares the same sentiment. “What a beautiful portrait indeed! Much more interesting than Vogue, Bazaar and ELLE combined.”
