The Hits and (Many) Misses of Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week Spring 2021

Images: Imaxtree

The haute couture shows definitely looked different this season. Heavyweights Elie Saab, Givenchy and Zuhair Murad actually skipped Paris this time around. But there was still plenty to see. Especially since the major couturiers supplied a little escapism as we took in the Spring 2021 collections from the comfort of our own homes.

Iris van Herpen kicked things off by proving sustainable and recycled materials are just as luxurious as new fabrics. At Christian Dior, Maria Grazia Chiuri drew inspiration from tarot cards. Then it was on to Olivier Theyskens’ second haute couture outing at Azzaro. And this was only day one.

Chanel’s presentation saw models walk a petal-strewn runway wearing an array of dresses fit for a prom, waistcoats made out of the fashion house’s signature tweed and satin shirts teamed with ruffled skirts. Pierpaolo Piccioli remained in Rome to present Valentino’s showcase featuring an army of models strutting in Instagram-worthy platform heels. Meanwhile, Alexandre Vauthier is clearly ready to party judging by his 80s-inspired collection.

Kim Jones closed out the week by making his Fendi debut. Demi Moore, Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell and Christy Turlington helped flaunt the 19-look collection by walking around a set of Perspex cases that proved perfect for social distancing.

Click through the slideshow to discover all the hits and misses of the season, according to our unfiltered forum members.

Jill Kortleve Falls Victim to Some Questionable Styling on Vogue Spain’s February 2021 Cover

Vogue Spain has been at the top of our must-read list for many months. It’s all thanks to the mag’s impeccable choice of cover subjects, like Esther Cañadas, Indya Moore and Amber Valletta. So our forum members were incredibly sad to learn of Eugenia de la Torriente’s abrupt departure from the Spanish fashion bible back in December. (But at least she rounded out her tenure with a flawless Penélope Cruz offering.) Jill Kortleve is the mag’s latest cover star posing for the title’s February 2021 issue. Photographed by Giampaolo Sgura, the Dutch beauty wears a look from Miu Miu’s Resort 2021 collection for the black-and-white cover shot highlighted by a yellow Vogue masthead.

It looks like Vogue Spain’s streak is over. “Eugenia hasn’t even exited the building and the covers are already trite. Awful, every single thing about it,” said Benn98.

“Catalog at best,” MON pointed out.

“Test shot at most. This is ridiculous! What the hell is Vogue doing with covers where there is NO fierce pose, the model does NOT look at the camera and the fashion is nonexistent…” ranted Bertrando3.

Forum member helmutnotdead isn’t buying it: “It’s 2021 and honestly I don’t get why people are booking this gorgeous girl because she’s plus-size and they’re always hiding her body. It’s ridiculous.”

Armani couldn’t agree more. “WHAT is this? What in the world is she wearing in the first place? She evidently didn’t know a photo was about to be taken here so why this as the cover image? As always her body is, indeed, hidden from view.”

“Well the only thing that’s missing are the socks. Disgusting cover,” declared Srdjan.

“Looks like she just finished a StairMaster workout and was inspired by Mariah Carey and Beyoncé with the heels,” voiced Summer Day.

Check out Jill’s accompanying cover story and share your thoughts here.

10 Colored Mascaras That Will Make You Forget About Black

When we think of mascara, we usually think of black, black and more black. There’s a reason why black mascara is available in countless shades. You can find light black, deep black and blackest black. But black is far from your only option. There are many other colors that equally deserve a spot in your makeup bag.

You probably notice the brown and navy shades when you pick up your favorite black mascara, but you can find almost every color of the rainbow. Purple, green and blue are popular options, but you can also get gold and red colored mascaras.

A colored mascara can seem intimidating when you’re used to your tried-and-true black, but colored mascaras are actually more wearable than most bold eyeshadows or liners. What’s more, when you’re wearing a colored mascara, you don’t really need anything else to enhance your eyes. Just a swipe on your lashes is enough to make them pop. Take a look at the colored mascaras you can try besides your beloved black.

Street Style Sightings Straight From Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week Spring 2021

As with all fashion weeks these days, we weren’t quite sure what the street style would look like for the Paris Haute Couture Spring 2021 season. Or if there would be any sightings at all. Well, there was a smattering of models off duty and guests dressed to the nines spotted outside the shows. But the street style was definitely streamlined.

Even so, several trends stood out. Fluffy coats were favored, whether in teddy form or shearling-lined. We also spotted a fair amount of puffers. When it came to bottoms, statement pants were a thing. From surprisingly wearable acid-wash jeans to plaid trousers to slightly shiny slacks, the pants made the outfit.

A face mask was obviously a must-have accessory. Although scarves also proved popular. Some served as silky accents, others were more winter-appropriate.

If you’re looking for a little late-winter layering inspo, we’ve got you covered. Check out the best street style from Paris Haute Couture Spring 2021 in the slideshow above.

10 Best Body Butters to Help Your Skin Survive Winter

Bad news: we haven’t even reached the halfway point of winter. That means there’s still a whole lot of dry air indoors to contend with. But there is a way to combat the moisture-sucking conditions. It’s called body butter.

Sometimes mistaken for a novelty, body butters are actually a necessary step in any hydration routine. We spend so much time moisturizing our face, we often forget that the rest of our body needs love, too. Usually packed with ingredients like shea butter or oils (argan, jojoba, avocado to name a few), buttering up can help keep parched skin at bay, from our elbows to our feet. And thanks to their whipped texture, they’re a lot more fun to apply than traditional lotions.

One of the other body butter benefits is they usually come enriched with irresistible fragrances — think rose or citrus. But if you’re more on the sensitive side, look for one that’s fragrance-free to avoid any adverse reactions.

Here are the 10 body butters that will help you and your skin get through the season.

Naomi Watts Returns to the Cover of Vogue Australia for January 2021

Say what you will about Australian Vogue, but at least Edwina McCann supports local talent. (Although the mag’s recent covers starring Adut Akech and Cate Blanchett were a little lackluster.) Now the Aussie fashion bible welcomes back Naomi Watts for January 2021 four years after her last cover appearance. On the current cover, the actress wears a look from Chanel’s Cruise 2021 collection selected by stylist Elissa Santisi for the shot captured by Carin Backoff.

The cover garnered mixed reviews from our forum members. “Another basic cover from Vogue Australia. There isn’t any improvement in sight since the atrocity that was Awkwafina’s cover last month,” critiqued an unimpressed Ken Doll Jenner.

The Hollywood Reporter at best. Vogue Australia lost it,” stated MON.

“I have said this and I am going to say this again — Carin Backoff should back off from photography,” commented dontbeadrag.

GERGIN wasn’t all too impressed, either. “She looks very uncertain, nobody does my Naomi Watts dirty like that!”

“The cover may not be the most groundbreaking, but it’s undoubtedly a thousand times better and more Vogue-worthy than Awkwafina’s cover from last month. I like Naomi Watts and oddly enough I’m a fan of the neon green masthead with the rest of the color scheme — it’s bold and impactful,” voiced vogue28.

THD96 definitely agreed: “Loving the combo of black, white and neon green which makes the cover really stand out. Much better than Awkwafina last month.”

“Not a fan of her, but I really like the cover. Art direction, color scheme, the styling — everything,” approved Benn98.
