These Scalp Toners Will Help You Reach Your #HairGoals

For years we’ve solely been focusing on hair care, but our scalps need a little TLC, too. Scalp care has been gaining momentum with several brands creating scalp-centered treatments, from scrubs to detoxifying shampoos. But now there’s another way to whip your scalp into shape: scalp toners.

Adding a scalp toner to your hair care regimen will help balance your scalp’s pH levels and ease any itchiness and irritation. Toning your scalp removes pesky product buildup and the massaging action helps circulate blood flow, which can boost hair growth.

Ready to add a new step to your hair care routine? Here are the best scalp toners around.

You’ll Either Love or Loathe Kaia Gerber’s Vogue Japan September 2020 Cover

It’s hard to believe that the all-important September issues are already dropping and as usual, Vogue Japan is up first. And it looks like the industry’s obsession with Kaia Gerber is still going strong. In the last two years, Kaia’s made her third appearance on Vogue Paris, made her debut on British Vogue and has covers of Vogue Italia and American Vogue under her belt. Now Kaia is back on Japanese Vogue posing in a lace top and latex trousers from Saint Laurent’s Fall 2020 offering picked by Anna Dello Russo. The model looks striking in the sultry cover shot captured by Luigi & Iango.

The styling and concept set off a fierce debate on our forums. “Sorry, but Kaia doesn’t fit the ‘femme fatale’ vibe…” critiqued burbuja8910.

“Honestly find this quite disturbing. She simply looks too young for this to not feel creepy,” added tipi1355.

“It’s not a bad cover, but not September-worthy. Guess we have to get used to seeing this sexed-up version of Kaia now that she’s 18,” commented Summer Day.

“I love the styling, the hair, the makeup and the sexiness. Kaia looks fabulous! As always, I’m thrilled to see that Luigi & Iango shot the cover cause they do it best for Vogue Japan. And you can count on the mag to stay true to their vision! No gimmicks, no bulls*it — just fashion!” aracic pointed out.

GivenchyAddict was in the same frame of mind: “Saint Laurent, Kaia, Luigi & Iango, Anna Dello Russo — I’m in.”

Are you a fan? Check out Kaia’s cover feature and share your thoughts here.

Prevent Melty Makeup With These Best Setting Sprays

You can have a flawless smoky eye and Kardashian-level contouring, but none of that matters if your makeup melts off your face a few hours later. A makeup setting spray is key to preventing smudges and looking flawless all day (and night) long.

When we want our makeup to last, we usually reach for long-wearing formulas or primers. But we sometimes forget the final step that seals the deal: a good setting spray. It’s like a nail polish top coat for your face. It may seem strange to spritz over freshly applied makeup, but a lightweight setting spray will seal makeup in place without smudging or distorting it. The best formulas also hydrate and provide a healthy glow.

When used in conjunction with primers and long-wearing makeup formulas, makeup setting sprays ensure your makeup will stand up to heat, humidity and sweat — no touch-ups required. Here are the best makeup setting sprays to help avoid makeup meltdowns this season.

13 Straw Bags You Can Still Carry Come Fall

Straw bags are a thing again. It started a few seasons back with brands like Jacquemus and Loewe sending woven carryalls down their respective runways. Now the beachy bags are summer staples, but what happens when September arrives? Well, even the best straw bags tend to be put away in favor of more autumn-appropriate options.

With money being so tight these days, it seems silly to invest in a bag that you can only cart around a few months of the year. But fear not. There are stylish straw bags you can tote your essentials in until winter arrives.

So what makes a straw bag fall-friendly? In simplest terms, color and shape. In regards to the former, you want to opt for shades like brown, tan, red, pink and black. Winter white is also OK as long as it’s just an accent color. While we all love fringe and oversized totes, they really don’t have a shelf life after August. Bucket, crescent, boxy, circle and crossbody bags are all suitable from September on.

See the slideshow above for the best straw bags to buy now and sport everywhere before the snow falls.

Vogue Paris Gives Natalia Vodianova Her Second August 2020 Cover

We’ve been singing the praises of Emmanuelle Alt over recent months as the editor successfully navigates Vogue Paris through the pandemic. First came a pair of dazzling Bella and Gigi Hadid covers followed by two equally brilliant issues featuring Mica Argañaraz and Natasja Madsen. Another Nathaniel Goldberg-shot cover comes our way for August 2020 as Natalia Vodianova returns to the French fashion bible’s front cover six years after her last appearance. Styled by Alt, the Russian beauty whips her hair in the cover shot while sporting a navy blue jumpsuit from Christian Dior’s Fall 2020 collection.

Did the mag’s latest cover extend its winning streak? “Two white background covers by Nathaniel Goldberg in a row. It’s not bad,” confessed mikel the moment the cover dropped.

“I wasn’t expecting something this fresh and I love it,” raved kokobombon.

“Not my favorite cover, but you can’t go wrong with Natalia! She looks great as always and naturally Vogue Paris is once again the winner of the month,” agreed aracic.

The cover didn’t sit well with everyone, however. “I honestly don’t get the love for this cover. It’s very mundane, even with the movement,” shared an underwhelmed Summer Day.

“Doesn’t seem much different than the previous cover and the blast of air has made the condition of her hair look awful, like it’s frizzy and lank all at the same time,” tigerrouge pointed out.

“Natalia isn’t the best when it comes to movement. She looks very stiff,” said GivenchyHomme.

“It could have been better. However, considering the circumstances, it’s still a decent cover,” defended MON.

A hit or miss? Check out the contents of the issue and join the debate here.

These Are the Best Band Tees to Rock Right Now

T-shirts are staples in everyone’s wardrobe. And for good reason. They’re super versatile and super comfy. (See: white T-shirts.) Band tees are another easy-peasy way to upgrade your look. But the best band tees aren’t restricted to rock ’n’ roll groups.

Sure, you probably already have a version of those ubiquitous tongue tees The Rolling Stones made famous. Or one of the many tops celebrating The Beatles. We’re casting a wider net, though. Not only are we craving ways to give shout-outs to classic 70s, 80s and 90s bands, like Queen, Fleetwood Mac, Mötley Crüe, Blondie, Nirvana, The Ramones…you get the idea. But we’re also looking for tees portraying iconic groups from other genres, including rap and R&B.

Just like their less graphic cousins, the best band tees are pretty easy to style. They go with everything from distressed jeans to fancy maxi skirts. Plus, they come in a range of fits. You can opt for a slimmer silhouette or go boxy with a more oversized cut.

Get ready to stan for your favorite band with one of these cool tees.

Miriam Sanchez Poses on the Empty Streets of Madrid for Vogue Spain’s August 2020 Cover

Vogue Spain kick-started 2020 on a high note with delightful Hailey Bieber and Ana de Armas covers. Plus, the mag was praised for its symbolic pandemic cover illustrated by Ignasi Monreal. But the Spanish fashion bible has disappointed us over recent months with some questionable Laura Dern and Naomi Campbell covers. For August 2020, another symbolic cover comes our way featuring Miriam Sanchez. Photographed by Miguel Reveriego, the model poses on the empty streets of Madrid decked out in a Christian Dior creation courtesy of Juan Cebrian.

How did the cover fare with our forum members? “When I look at this cover the first thing I see is the building and then I notice there’s a girl sitting at the bottom of the picture. Good thing she’s wearing red, otherwise she’d completely disappear from this cover!” pointed out aracic.

“Looks like a mood board with cut-outs. Yikes,” proclaimed MON.

[ Not a tFS forum member yet? Click here to join! ]

Sharing the same underwhelming sentiment toward the cover was Nymphaea: “Both the building and the red dress are beautiful, but totally don’t connect with each other in this pic. The basics are there, but the result is disappointing.”

“I’m only able to appreciate it for the fact that it captures a moment in time, a moment we all know too well right now — the stillness and silence of once busy streets. Other than that, the cover offers nothing else,” said vogue28.

“It had the makings of a good cover — all dressed up with nowhere to go, standing alone in the street like the last woman alive — but it ended up looking like nothing aside from the artificially saturated colors and art direction that see Miriam being out modeled by a stone building,” commented tigerrouge.

All the August 2020 Magazine Covers We Loved and Hated

After several months of lockdowns and social distancing, it appears most mags are getting the hang of things. We’ve already highlighted how publications have been getting creative when it comes to producing covers during the pandemic. And, just like last month, the August 2020 covers show some are better at it than others.

From stars snapping their own photos to illustrated covers to reprints, mags are doing their best to put out new content. But we were pleasantly surprised to see some actual fashion this month. We love that Vogue China went vintage. Plus the fact that Harper’s Bazaar U.K. actually shot its covers outdoors, which felt like a breath of fresh air.

And then there were the (unexpected) cover subjects. Vogue scored 10s across the board with its powerful Simone Biles cover. Allure also went the athlete route by giving its August 2020 cover to soccer stars Ashlyn Harris and Ali Krieger.

Scroll through the slideshow above for the best and worst August 2020 covers. And come back next month to see what the September issues have in store.

Binx Walton Is All Smiles on Vogue Italia’s July/August 2020 Cover

It’s fair to say that Emanuele Farneti hasn’t been in our good graces over recent months. After all, we’ve encountered our fair share of questionable Vogue Italia issues, from covers drawn by children to the magazine creating its very own CGI cover star. But is Farneti about to turn over a new leaf? Conventional photoshoots are back for the publication’s July/August 2020 offering with Ethan James Green returning for his second Italian Vogue cover shoot. Model Binx Walton dashes across the studio decked out in a look from Louis Vuitton’s Fall 2020 collection (selected by Carlos Nazario) in the joyous cover image.

The cover proved to be a hit with the majority of our forum members. “Whoa, I’ve just fallen immediately in love with this cover!” confessed Valentine27.

“An actual person on the cover? And my girl Binx? Doing something else than standing there? Wearing Nicolas Ghesquière’s Vuitton? Styled by Carlos? I’m about to have a heart attack!” raved Lola701.

“I have to say it: the cover, the concept, the cast…A TOTAL SERVE,” approved jorgepalomo.

Forum member vogue28 was also impressed: “Gotta hand it to Farneti on this because it’s the best Vogue Italia cover in months. The heart illustration and the use of the Louis Vuitton outfit don’t even bother me. A resounding thumbs-up from me!”

“Finally something good and fashionable from Vogue Italia! But I’m under no illusions: I believe this is a good exception in a sea of senseless and pretentious garbage. You know what they say…even a broken clock is right twice a day,” voiced apple.

“I feel like everyone is liking this cover because Vogue Italia extremely lowered their standards. For me it’s very basic when we compare it with any issue under Franca Sozzani. I’m happy for Binx, but I feel like someone else would bring much more life to this cover,” critiqued misszk.

Check out some previews of the issue and share your thoughts here.

17 Shades of Nude Nail Polish to Complement Every Skin Tone

image: Imaxtree

Image: Imaxtree

Nude nail polish is supposed to complement your complexion. But finding the perfect nude for your skin tone can be a daunting task. It can require trying on an insane amount of shades before you find the right one. Zoya Creative Director Rebecca Isa says the key is to “first determine the intensity of your complexion — if you’re light, medium or dark. Then determine if you have warm or cool undertones.” Look at the underside of your wrist and if your veins are blue, you are cool and if your veins are green, you are warm.

Celebrity manicurist Deborah Lippmann suggests looking at your unpolished nail bed to help guide you. “Usually, nail beds are pink, white or the same color as your skin. A nude polish that matches your nail bed will most likely match your skin tone.” She also suggests looking at your cuticles. If the nude lacquer isn’t right for your skin tone, your cuticle will actually look red or “dirty.”

For women with very fair complexions, Lippmann advises to steer clear of polishes that are too beige or too dark because “they will make their hands look pale and sickly.” Instead, look for colors with cool undertones with a hint of pink to help offset any redness in the skin and cuticles.

“Most nude shades will suit women with medium skin tones, but they should try to stay away from shades that have too much of a yellow undertone or are too pink. For this complexion, they ideally want to stay somewhere in between.”

Those with more yellow undertones should choose a nude that is a bit bolder to help brighten their complexion. A lacquer with a bit more pink in it will help give the skin a natural glow so avoid shades with yellow undertones. Olive complexions should try a deep beige or a very light neutral caramel color.

Warmer, honey-hued ladies, like Beyoncé, percolate in coffee-colored shades with orange and yellow undertones. “Avoid ashy gray shades as they could make skin appear washed out or dull,” advises Lippmann. While those with cinnamon-brown complexions look great in milky browns that lighten up the nail and give slight contrast. According to Isa, mahogany brown women look divine in deep browns with a bit of red and onyx-colored gals excel in shades of dark chocolate with a bit of mauve.

And remember, nude polish no longer means boring. It doesn’t have to be the dull, opaque finish of seasons past. “That look gave your hands a plastic mannequin dimension. The new way to wear nudes is with a dewy finish,” says Isa. “Start off with one coat of an opaque nude as your base, then layer over it a sheerer nude to give the color a nice, soft sheen, like it has sunlight reflecting off of it.” This will help prevent the lacquer from looking too heavy and saturated.

So no matter your coloring, there is a nude out there for you. Click through our gallery to find the right one.

Our Favorite Flats You Can Wear Straight Through September

With so many of us working from home right now, our high heels are getting a bit of a break. Hell, most of us aren’t even bothering to wear shoes at all. (No one on Zoom can see your feet anyway.) When we do slip on shoes, we tend to favor super stylish flats. Because comfort.

Since we’re past the midway point of summer, our focus is on flats we can wear now through September. And preferably once again once May 2021 rolls around. Pastel hues, breathable mesh fabric and open backs are just a few of the features we desire. That way we can flaunt them with everything from Bermuda shorts and tank tops to jeans and lightweight knits.

Another important element? Price. While we have been adding slightly pricey versions to our virtual carts, many of our top picks are actually pretty affordable. We’re talking as low as just under $18.

Scroll through the slideshow above for the most stylish flats of this season and beyond.

Laetitia Casta Captivates on Vanity Fair France’s ‘Stunning’ August 2020 Cover

The last time Vanity Fair France got our attention was back in 2016 with a Lily-Rose Depp offering. Four years later, the publication is back on our radar thanks to its new August 2020 cover featuring Laetitia Casta. Whether she’s fronting Numéro, posing nude on ELLE France or landing the cover of Vogue Paris, Laetitia always delivers. The French actress poses in front of a stark white studio backdrop before the lens of Nathaniel Goldberg for the cover. Laetitia’s natural beauty shines through in the clean and minimal cover image with the star simply wearing a crisp Chanel shirt picked by Camille Bidault-Waddington.

“Stunning as always! I love to see Laetitia on covers,” agreed Bertrando3.

“Stunning cover, Laetitia looks flawless with this natural beauty style,” said burbuja8910.

Also equally impressed with the cover was Benn98: “This cover is simply stunning. From the font to the uncomplicated close-up.”

“Absolutely stunning!” echoed MON.

“Laetitia is such a beauty!” raved FashionMuseDior.

“Nathaniel Goldberg out here helping the French publications BIG time during the pandemic — first Vogue Paris and now Vanity Fair France. This is a beautiful cover, love the simplicity and rawness of the shot and of course Laetitia Casta is always a welcome sight,” declared vogue28.
