The Most Unpredictable Spring Pieces to Add to Your Closet

Experimenting with fashion is half the fun. Especially when it comes to picking things to wear this spring. Sure, we could all simply go the safe route by only indulging in the trends that either suit our present wardrobes or come in some watered-down, totally acceptable in public format. Snore.

Now is actually a great time to branch out since you can test out these looks at home and work up the courage to rock them all over town once we start heading outside again without restrictions. From a flashy swimsuit worn as a top to a statement hat that, well, makes a statement, we rounded up some of the freshest spring pieces around. And they will still be relevant come summer.

Rihanna Serves Up Two Stellar British Vogue Covers for May 2020

If there’s one person we’re able to stomach on the cover of Vogue month after month, it’s Rihanna. Time and time again, the star proves just how unbelievably photogenic she is and whether she’s giving American Vogue its best cover in months or becoming the first black woman to appear on British Vogue‘s all-important September issue, our forum members are all in. Edward Enninful finally welcomes Rihanna back to U.K. Vogue for May 2020 serving up a pair of covers photographed by Steven Klein. For cover one (below), Rihanna wears Burberry and a custom Stephen Jones durag (marking the first time a durag has ever appeared on the cover of Vogue), while on cover two (after the jump) she sports a Maison Margiela jacket worn over a bodysuit from her own Savage x Fenty lingerie label.

Was Rihanna’s latest a hit on our forums? “I think the covers are so fantastic! They are cool/edgy, but with a sort of more Renaissance portrait kind of look. One of the coolest and most ‘new Vogue‘ covers from Edward yet,” applauded Blayne266.

“I absolutely love this. I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of Rihanna on covers. She is just such a natural stunner to me,” declared slayage.

“YES, YES, YES — that was my literal first reaction when I saw this. Rihanna can NEVER do wrong, she is a better model than most working models today and I would always pick her above any model covering Vogue,” heralded [Piece Of Me].

Sharing the same sentiment was ivano: “Rihanna is one of the few that could pass as a model. Her beauty is breathtaking. I like these covers.”

“Fantastic cover, I love everything about it! The color scheme is gorgeous and I love the styling,” praised LastNight.

But not everyone was impressed. “Flummoxed that anyone could find this appealing,” stated KINGofVERSAILLES.

“I have NEVER seen such a bad shot of her, wow! Both covers are just so unappealing and try-hard! Rihanna can pull off almost anything, but not this!” agreed Miss Dalloway.

Stackable Jewelry Is the Best Way to Bring a Little Bling to Spring

By now you’re well aware of the Instagram influencer-approved method of layering necklaces. But it’s not just your necklaces you should consider doubling (or tripling) up on. From rings to bracelets and even earrings, stackable jewelry is trending and we’re all for it.

There are many ways to go about tackling the trend. You can buy single pieces of various sizes and widths to test your stacking ability. Or, if you’re feeling a little gun-shy, invest in stackable sets that take all the guesswork out of the process. We also recommend keeping the stacking to one area of the body. So if you plan on lining up your rings, avoid stocking up on bracelets or earrings. Or if bangles are more your bag, don’t load up on rings or earrings. You can go right ahead and layer your necklaces like usual, though.

When it comes to pricing, you don’t have to part with big bucks to indulge in the trend. We rounded up stackable jewelry for all budgets. So whether you can only afford $30 or can shell out several hundred dollars to get the luxe look, we’ve got you covered.

See the slideshow above for a list of stackable jewelry guaranteed to make the season bright.

Butter Yellow Is the Color of Spring (and Most Likely Summer)

Jacquemus Spring 2020

While Pantone is pushing Classic Blue for 2020, another color is taking over. We’re talking about butter yellow. Forget the pastel and more golden varieties of the sunny hue, the more middle-of-the-road shade is taking center stage.

It’s called butter yellow because it resembles the shade of, you guessed it, butter. And it’s surprisingly versatile. Designers like Simon Porte Jacquemus and Daniel Lee offered up seasonally-appropriate dresses and shorts in the buttery hue as part of the Jacquemus and Bottega Veneta Spring 2020 collections, respectively.

Bottega Veneta Spring 2020

Naturally, the street style set was already all over the trend while checking out the Fall 2020 shows. So be prepared to see the hot hue into summer and maybe even as far as fall. (That means that butter yellow lightweight sweater will look just as good out on the streets in a few months as it does while you’re working from home.)

You already can find everything in butter yellow. We checked the online stores and spotted jeans, dresses, bags, bike shorts, ballet flats and more in the color of the moment. And it’s relatively easy to work the smooth shade into your wardrobe. Our only advice is to avoid wearing it from head to toe.

Cocomi Makes Her Debut on Vogue Japan With a Truly Captivating May 2020 Cover

It’s like a breath of fresh air whenever a fresh new face greets us down at the newsstand and Vogue Japan delivers just that for May 2020. You may find it hard to believe that it’s very rare for a Japanese cover star to front the Japanese fashion bible solo (the last time was when Namie Amuro landed the mag’s October 2018 cover). So we were pleasantly surprised to see Cocomi make her modeling debut on the publication’s latest issue. Shot by photographic duo and forum favorite Luigi & Iango, Christian Dior’s new brand ambassador wears a look from the French fashion house’s Spring 2020 Haute Couture collection for the stunning cover shot.

Vogue Japan May 2020 : Cocomi by Luigi & Iango

IMAGE: VOGUE.CO.JP

But for a select few of our forum members, the cover fell flat. “We all make choices and this cover is a choice,” proclaimed jorgepalomo.

“Pretentious yet again. What’s the fantasy? You can’t just have a fan, tilt the shot, add text and call it a day,” MON chimed in.

[ Not a tFS forum member yet? Click here to join! ]

“What a mess,” complained phungnam96.

“Over recent years, I’ve become a HUGE advocate for everything Luigi & Iango and it’s a very rare occasion when I am majorly underwhelmed by their work. This cover with Cocomi, however, does absolutely nothing for me. I loathe whenever a subject isn’t looking out toward us readers in the cover shot. It’s too artsy and is an eyesore,” critiqued vogue28.

“There’s something mesmerizing about those pleats and all that lilac… I must say it instantly captured my attention. Upon closer inspection, it is a bit of a mess tangled with the text and all that…but I don’t hate it,” confessed aracic.

Benn98 was a fan: “No idea who she is, but I LOVE the image. It’s like an illustration that came to life. She’s a welcome reprieve from Luigi & Iango’s usual fierce and overly Photoshopped glamazons.”

“Whoa, what a gorgeous cover shot, finally someone dares to do something a bit different, love it,” praised Miss Dalloway.

Get Your Flower Fix With One of These Fresh Floral Bags for Spring

Thanks to Miranda Priestly, it’s been ingrained in all of us that florals for spring aren’t exactly groundbreaking. But we’re daring to disagree this season. That’s because floral bags are popping up everywhere for Spring 2020 and the pivot is surprisingly refreshing.

And it’s a pretty mixed bouquet. There are your more literal interpretations, watercolor patterns and 3-D accents. They also come in a variety of sizes. If you’re still feeling the micro trend, there are plenty of options out there. Betting on bigger bags thanks to all those recent street style sightings? There are tons of carryalls to choose from that can actually carry everything. If you prefer something in the middle, midsize clutches and top-handle bags are also on offer.

The best part? Nothing brightens your day (even if you’re stuck inside) like a fresh floral bag. Plus, they’re pretty versatile. You can tote them with everything from spring dresses to seasonal skirt suits to stylish loungewear you’re more than willing to wear outside.

Check out the slideshow above to see which floral bag — or bags — to add to your spring repertoire.

Dua Lipa Disappoints on Vogue Australia’s Underwhelming April 2020 Cover

We have a love/hate relationship with Dua Lipa, at least when it comes to our favorite fashion glossies. Our forum members weren’t impressed by her stints on V Magazine, British Vogue or ELLE, but Vogue Turkey and Vogue Spain‘s covers received standing ovations. Now it’s Vogue Australia’s turn with the singer wearing a showstopping Valentino creation picked by Jillian Davison for the vibrant April 2020 cover captured by Charles Dennington.

Vogue Australia April 2020 : Dua Lipa by Charlie Dennington

IMAGE: VOGUE.COM.AU

But the outcome didn’t enthrall our forum members. “The composition is lazy, she looks bored and the front arm looks disembodied,” declared Benn98.

“Do we even know who Dua Lipa is in Australia? Barely. Another ‘exclusive’ precisely nobody is dying to read. Out of touch. Maybe it’s impressive to advertisers when they can get ‘big names’ to shoot for Vogue Australia and I use the term ‘big names’ loosely,” added an underwhelmed magsaddict.

[ Not a tFS forum member yet? Click here to join! ]

“Nah, zilch, zero, nada. Will be forgotten in 10 minutes,” stated dontbeadrag.

Miss Dalloway wasn’t exactly thrilled, either. “So EVERYONE is an icon these days? Call me in 15 years time! The cover is bland though it’s not awful, it’s just not impressive because she is not selling any part of this idea!”

“The authentic voice of music’s new pop icon? Please. She’s simply another one in the sea of forgettable hit-making pop stars,” agreed aracic.

“I think she has a singing voice with broad appeal, a couple catchy singles and is absolutely stunning (especially without the blond hair), but I can’t seem to fully get on board with the hype. The more exposure she gets, the less interested I become,” expressed KINGofVERSAILLES.

Bella Hadid Gives Vogue Greece a Pair of ‘Beautiful but Sad’ April 2020 Covers

Newsstand domination is still in full effect for Bella Hadid. After her recent appearance on Vogue Korea, the American beauty just added another major magazine cover to her impressive body of work. Exactly one year after starring on Vogue Greece’s magnificent relaunch cover, Bella is welcomed back for April 2020 delivering a pair of striking covers. Captured by Chris Colls with Tonne Goodman on styling duties, Bella appears melancholic on cover one (below) and serves good face for the vibrant alternative (after the jump).

Vogue Greece April 2020 : Bella Hadid by Chris Colls

IMAGE: VOGUE.GR

Our forum members were a divided bunch after checking out both covers. “The first cover bores me to death. The second cover is something I’d expect from Vogue Portugal. A waste of Bella Hadid,” noted MON.

“Second cover works, but that first one is just too depressing for these times!” Miss Dalloway chimed in.

“The first one is certainly not going to cheer us up during these difficult times and the other one feels like I’ve already seen it a hundred times…” stated Valentine27.

[ Not a tFS forum member yet? Click here to join! ]

Benn98 wasn’t exactly elated, either. “As depressing as the first one is, I do like that one more.”

“Once upon a time, this would have been a Peter Lindbergh shot of a model in masculine attire with the sense that women keep the world turning, but this just looks slouchy and sad. Beautiful but sad,” added tigerrouge.

Forum member vogue28 completely disagreed: “I find these to be gorgeous. Also love the interpretation of the ‘We Are One’ cover line. It’s their first anniversary since the relaunch, but also perfectly timed for the ongoing coronavirus situation across the globe, suggesting we’re all in this together. Nail on the head!”

30 Pretty Pastel Makeup Looks for Spring

Images: Imaxtree

Pastels are synonymous with spring. The soft shades show up in gardens, on Easter eggs and in our wardrobes, providing a welcome change from the dark, somber tones of the colder months. But don’t stop there: pastels are also a big makeup trend this season.

Pale pink, lavender, baby blue, mint, soft yellow, peach…there are so many gorgeous pastels to play around with. They look beautiful when applied to one feature or brushed on the entire face. Forget the dated pastels of yore, today’s shades offer soft, sheer washes of color and rich, heavily pigmented options for dramatic looks. No matter the formulation, pastel makeup adds an ethereal finish that mermaid and unicorn fans will find irresistible. The charm is only increased when pastel makeup is combined with a pastel outfit.

It’s officially spring so don’t delay in celebrating with pastel makeup. Look for your favorite sugared almond shades and take inspiration from the runways on how to wear them.

Ana de Armas Stars on Vogue Spain’s ‘Simple and Striking’ April 2020 Cover

Ana de Armas is on fire right now. Fresh off the cover of Vanity Fair, the Cuban-Spanish actress takes to the cover of Vogue Spain for April 2020. The publication has been riding a wave of success on our forums lately by serving up several stunning covers featuring Karlie Kloss, Edie Campbell and Hailey Bieber. And the hits keep on coming with photographer Thomas Whiteside and stylist Juan Cebrian teaming up for a downright gorgeous cover shot with Ana looking utterly stunning in Givenchy.

Another win for Vogue Spain. “Gorgeous! Vogue Spain keeps coming up with these stunning yet simple minimalist covers. It could actually become their new identity. Pose, art direction and colors are all perfectly mixed,” praised Benn98.

“From color palette to layout and subject, this is one magnificent cover! Light years ahead of her Vanity Fair. She’s a naturally beautiful woman and it doesn’t take much to highlight that and this team did it right,” approved aracic.

[ Not a tFS forum member yet? Click here to join! ]

“I actually love this. Everything works. One of the best ones they’ve had,” echoed MON.

In agreement over how perfect everything looked was HeatherAnne: “Gorgeous, the relaxed pose and color palette complement her beauty so perfectly.”

“A truly fabulous cover, extremely strong and commanding. Thomas Whiteside has done Ana justice, just love everything about this entire cover from the pose to the pink masthead teamed with the red backdrop. Peeeeerfect. Bravo, Vogue Spain!” applauded vogue28.

“It’s simple yet sexy, I like it! Ana is an actress I like too so it’s great to see her booking these covers…” added bluestar.

[Piece Of Me] described the cover as “simple and striking” and we couldn’t agree more.

Suzanne Somers Shares the Age-Defying Products She Can’t Live Without

Suzanne Somers

Image: Courtesy

Given the current mandate to stay at home, actress, author and businesswoman Suzanne Somers, who’s 73 years young and wrote the new book A New Way to Age: The Most Cutting-Edge Advances in Antiaging, is spending more time doing two of her favorite things. “For one, I’m cozying up in NakedCashmere. I live in their cashmere sweatpants and hoodies! They’re so comfortable and soft. I have them in three colors: off-white, gray and black.”

Another must for Somers, especially in these uncertain times, is her daily green juice. “Every morning I start my day with a kale, spinach, apple, lemon and ginger smoothie. It’s delicious and no matter what I eat for the rest of the day, I know I’ve had at least two to three cups of organic fruits and veggies.”

No doubt it’s in large part this penchant for taking care of herself that has contributed to her seemingly ageless look. But it doesn’t stop at cashmere and green juice. Here’s a look at the five products Somers says she swears by to stay looking (and feeling) young.

Marion Cotillard Delivers a Dreamy Vogue Paris April 2020 Cover

French women actually don’t front Vogue Paris that often so it’s an all-out celebration whenever Emmanuelle Alt gives the cover to homegrown talent. Get ready to party because Marion Cotillard is the mag’s latest cover star fronting the April 2020 issue eight years after her last stint on the French fashion bible. Photographed by Lachlan Bailey, the face of Chanel’s iconic N°5 fragrance wears a look from Chanel’s Pre-Fall 2020 collection while resting on silk sheets.

The cover was a hit on our forums. “I love it a lot. Seductive yet laid-back. Always down for a Marion cover,” approved MON.

“What a gorgeous cover shot, finally Alt did something different! Lachlan is a fantastic photographer, I always love his covers,” applauded Miss Dalloway.

“Oh my god, this is gorgeous and deceptively simple. The setting and colors are very lush, expensive and soothing and the gold makeup is gorgeous,” raved dodencebt.

Srdjan expressed the same amount of enthusiasm: “Gorgeous-looking A-lister, glamorous clothes and a sense of luxury — this is what a Vogue cover should feel like.”

“All for seeing French actresses on the cover of Vogue Paris! It’s just an added bonus that this cover works so beautifully, love the sense of luxurious comfort (especially given the current pandemic across the globe) and should’ve known Lachlan Bailey would’ve done Marion Cotillard justice,” said vogue28.

All the April 2020 Magazine Covers We Loved and Hated

While it’s always refreshing to see models get glossy covers, the April 2020 covers brought a shocking number of flops. In the models’ defense, most weren’t disappointing due to any fault of their own, but rather because of awful styling choices, snooze-worthy backdrops and cheap tricks (like an upside down cover). And no, celebrity covers didn’t fare any better this month. Not by a long shot.

But it wasn’t all bad. On the beauty front, it was great to see lots of natural looks, even though at times they appeared a bit too natural. (Looking like you haven’t washed your hair in a month isn’t something most people find inspiring.)

Check out the slideshow above for a look at the best and worst April 2020 covers.

Kendall Jenner Goes Glam for Holiday’s Spring/Summer 2020 Cover

Kendall Jenner has a hard time impressing our forums. Whether she’s being overshadowed by Jennifer Lopez in Versace’s current advertising campaign, looking pedestrian on the cover of L’Officiel or trying to make blue eyebrows happen on the cover of Allure, our forum members regularly call Kendall out. So we were eager to see how the American beauty’s latest cover would fare. For Holiday magazine’s Spring/Summer 2020 edition, Kendall sports some heavy makeup in a series of images styled by Alex White and lensed by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin.

So were our forum members finally impressed? “Stunning!” exclaimed Zposen the moment the cover dropped.

“Some of these are seriously stunning and not just the smiling/laughing ones. She looks alive, she’s doing something with her eyes!” added a pleasantly surprised KINGofVERSAILLES.

[ Not a tFS forum member yet? Click here to join! ]

“I love this. Like legit love this!” confessed MON.

Echoing the same sentiment was aracic: “I don’t like collage covers, but each and every shot of Kendall is absolutely magnificent on its own. The makeup, the nails, the tan, her beauty — it all complements each other and creates a beautiful, radiant vibe…”

“I was ready to hate this, but it works well. Nicely embodies the 1970s jet set heiress aesthetic without going overboard with it,” approved whippie.

TommysBaby couldn’t agree more. “I truly love this. The makeup is brilliant and the colors look beautiful together. Very, very well done by the team.”

12 Loungewear Looks That Still Make You Feel Like You’re Dressing to Impress

It’s pretty tempting when you’re working from home to just spend the day in the same T-shirt and sweatpants you slept in. But that gets old after a while. Although you don’t need to put on a three-piece suit, you should make an effort to dress for the occasion. And there are a surprising amount of luxe loungewear looks out there that’ll make you feel put-together, even when you’re stuck on the couch.

The variety of stylish loungewear is actually pretty impressive. There are ribbed sets with fashionable accents like split sleeves you won’t mind sporting out in public. There are cool loungewear dresses designed for lazy working days around the house. And the pajama trend is still very much a thing so you can wear the top with jeans or the bottoms with a tank later on. Don’t discount jumpsuits — they’re your best sartorial secret weapon right now.

The best part about investing in these pieces? You can still rock them together or separately as the season goes on. Plus, many will work in summer and once the weather cools back down again.

The Best Nail Art From the Fall 2020 Runways to Inspire Your Next At-Home Manicure

Images: Imaxtree

By now you’re probably running out of things to do at home. (We know we are.) What better way to pass the time than to treat yourself to some cool new nail art? So we turned to the Fall 2020 runways for a little inspo. And we found plenty.

If you’re already a wiz at at-home manis, challenge the extent of your artistic skills by recreating the scribbled black and white designs at Rag & Bone. Or you can try mastering the colorful layered look spotted at Christian Cowan. Since you have so much time on your hands, take a stab at the leopard printed digits from Philipp Plein.

If you consider yourself more of a novice, try leaving a couple of nails bare a la Junko Shimada. The pink polish with white tips from Moschino is also pretty easy to get right. Plus, the red swoops at 16Arlington and haphazard squares at Ulla Johnson are simple ways to hone your negative space technique.

Put that nail glue on your shelf to good use by applying black crystals around your nails just like at Simone Rocha. You can also try copying the crystal lineup from Giambattista Valli.

See the slideshow above for the best Fall 2020 nail art inspo to keep you occupied.

Bella Hadid Morphs Into Carla Bruni for Vogue Korea’s Vintage-Inspired April 2020 Cover

We’re used to seeing Bella Hadid greet us down at the newsstand and already just three months into 2020, we’ve encountered Bella on LOVE, Vogue Hong Kong and ELLE France. Now the current face of Moschino, Burberry and Helmut Lang (just to name a few) makes a stunning return to Vogue Korea for April 2020 morphing into her doppelgänger Carla Bruni for the occasion. Captured in the studio before a gray backdrop, Bella stands tall in a jumpsuit from Gucci’s Spring 2020 collection selected by Hyunji Nam for the black and white shot by Luigi & Iango.

“Who allowed this mess?” asked anadmm.

“Bella by Luigi & Iango and we get this? Shame on Vogue Korea…” added russianelf.

In the same frame of mind was TommysBaby: “Her nose looks botched and her expression, as per usual, looks like she’s disgusted. This is not a cover image. I cannot fathom this standing out on the newsstand. Very forgettable, indeed.”

GivenchyHomme wasn’t enthralled by the outcome, either. “The lighting is so bad. Just look at the tip of her nose! Then the rest of her face is dull and washed out. Even if she had her head down, it probably wouldn’t work, either. If you’re going for Steven Meisel, pay more mind to your lighting. It will make or break a shot.”

“Immediately gave me vintage Vogue Italia vibes and I’m not complaining. In the grand scheme of magazine covers nowadays, this is by no means dreadful, but I do wish Bella was looking straight down Luigi & Iango’s lens or the pose was a little stronger,” voiced vogue28.

“Love everything about this, very 90s Meisel for Vogue Italia and I always love a full-length Vogue cover!” praised Miss Dalloway.

The 7 Best Meditation Apps, Ranked

Many of us know we could benefit from meditation, but that knowledge doesn’t always translate into action. Why meditate when you can sleep for 10 more minutes or spend a few extra moments sweating out that double fudge mocha latte? We feel you, but the truth is, there’s a long list of reasons to meditate.

“We’ve noticed that one of the biggest obstacles that stand in the way of optimal health is chronic stress and most people underestimate the amount of wear and tear that happens physically, mentally and spiritually when they perpetually live in ‘fight or flight’ mode rather than ‘rest and digest’ mode,” says May Tom, MPH, RDN at Cal-a-Vie Health Spa in California. “Meditation brings us back to living the way nature intended; it’s a powerful vehicle that can move us out of stewing in toxic stress hormones into a space that allows the body to rest, rebuild and rejuvenate. This is probably the ultimate anti-aging secret!”

This begs the question — how long should you meditate to reap benefits? Unfortunately, there isn’t one simple answer. We’re all different and respond to different techniques in different dosages. While most group classes are 45 minutes to an hour (The Path, Inscape, MNDFL, Unplug and The DEN are all popular options in New York and Los Angeles), that doesn’t mean you have to limit yourself to that nor does it mean that five minutes of controlled breathing is a waste of time. In fact, you can try one minute a day and once you find that you can sit still and keep your mind relaxed, slowly progress to another minute.

To help set things in motion, here’s a look at seven of the best meditation apps, ranked.

Natasha Poly Stars on Vogue Russia’s Minimalist April 2020 Cover

On our forums, Natasha Poly is one model who can do no wrong. Whether she’s nailing the “new sexy” for Vogue Japan, proving she’s the ultimate Vogue Paris cover star or striking a fierce pose for Balmain‘s advertising campaign, Natasha always nails it. So we aren’t surprised to see the Russian beauty make a much-anticipated return to Vogue Russia for April 2020. Marking her 60th Vogue cover appearance, Natasha appears angelic while sitting on the studio floor wearing a white lacy dress from Givenchy’s Spring 2020 Haute Couture collection picked by Olga Dunina for the Claudia Knoepfel-shot image.

But Natasha’s latest failed to hit the spot. “A bit on the drab and forgettable side for me. It’s not only zoomed out, the art direction looks like an afterthought and I don’t get the styling. To think that both the photographer and editor actually pushed this forward as a cover image is laughable,” remarked Benn98.

“Was so excited to see Natasha, but this cover is dreadful! The boots are the biggest eyesore, I can’t even…such a shame,” agreed aracic.

“Minimalism does not always mean elegance. Her hair looks messy and this dress looks like your grandmother’s curtains and we all know how uncomfortable such heavy, rough boots are in warm weather. A Vogue cover has always been a window into a beautiful fairy tale, now it’s just a window into a provincial street,” Minerva13 chimed in.

Forum member tigerrouge shared the same sentiment: “I feel like I’ve seen this before — and the only thing missing is a baby. Bring the glamour back.”

“Why? Why are they doing something like this in 2020?” asked GivenchyHomme.

“May not be Natasha’s finest moment on a magazine cover, but there is NO WAY I am going to complain about Natasha Poly on the cover of Vogue — ever! A diehard Poly fan through and through right here so I’m sold no matter the outcome,” added vogue28.

Check out the supplement cover (featuring Natasha and her two adorable children) and have your say here.

Now’s the Perfect Time to Treat Your Skin to the Ancient Art of Gua Sha

Herbivore Botanicals Rose Quartz Gua Sha, $18 at Herbivore Botanicals

Unless you’ve been literally living under a rock, you already know about the benefits of face rollers. But there’s a new technique in town and it’s called gua sha. But it isn’t exactly new. In fact, gua sha predates acupuncture.

So what exactly is it?

Don’t be alarmed by the fact that gua sha translates to “scraping.” It really isn’t as harsh as it sounds.

“Traditionally speaking, gua sha is a technique used in traditional Chinese medicine that involves ‘scraping’ the skin with thin tools to increase circulation and decrease stagnation in the body to boost health and healing,” explains Herbivore Botanicals Creative Content Specialist Wren McMurdo Brignac.

All that scraping creates microtrauma to induce healing. “In skin care, gua sha facial tools are inspired by this technique because they also help increase circulation and move stagnation, but they’re meant to be used much more gently than in traditional Chinese medicine.”

Like with face rollers, gua sha tools come in a variety of materials. When choosing a crystal facial tool, make sure to take note of the metaphysical benefits of each gemstone. “For example, jade stimulates and inspires, rose quartz nurtures the heart, lapis helps to clear the mind and amethyst inspires peacefulness and calm,” says Brignac.

The tools also come in a variety of shapes. “When choosing a shape, go with the tool that looks like it will feel the best to use on your particular face. A teardrop shape is great for making long, sweeping strokes, while a heart or puzzle piece shape is best for sculpting focused areas like the nose and brows.”

How does it work?

First, you need to cleanse your face. Then apply your favorite face oil and grab your gua sha tool. “Using the concave edge of the tool, hug the brow bone and move outward toward the temple. With any linear edge of the tool, sweep the surface of the skin in short strokes upward toward the hairline. Continue this motion across the forehead to the temples,” says Brignac.

“To sculpt the eye area, use any outwardly curved edge of the tool and beginning at the inner corner of the eye, gently sweep along the outer eye socket toward the temple. To sculpt the cheekbones, use a concave edge of the tool and follow along the cheekbone with broad strokes from the nose outward toward the temple. Repeat the motion across the entire cheek area with the linear edge. To sculpt the jaw, begin at the center of the chin and massage in one continuous motion along the jawbone to relieve muscle tension. Once finished with the jawline, make one long sweeping motion from the center of the hairline down to the upper jaw and earlobe. Finally, move the tool from below the earlobe down to the neck toward the collarbones to encourage drainage to the lymph nodes.”

Don’t forget your body.

Gua sha also works great on the body, according to herbalist, acupuncturist and founder of Vie Healing Mona Dan, LAc., MTOM. “I recommend coconut oil for the body and jojoba oil for the face. For chronic issues, focus on pressing hard and swiftly moving in one direction about 15 times and waiting a few seconds and starting again. For less chronic and more for lymphatic drainage and an immune boost, less pressure and moving swiftly is beneficial.”

Both experts recommend using the tool daily or whenever your face or body feels puffy or stagnant.

“Besides helping preserve a youthful appearance of the skin, gua sha can help ease tension and increase skin’s ability to absorb products,” says Brignac. Many people even see results after their first session. But consistent use is needed to maximize benefits.

Reese Witherspoon Has a Blast on Vanity Fair’s April 2020 Cover

It’s safe to say that Vanity Fair is back on our radar. The title closed out 2019 with a stupendous RuPaul cover and won us over with its annual Hollywood issue at the beginning of the year (although the mag disappointed us last month with a less-than-stellar Ana de Armas offering). Now Radhika Jones gives Vanity Fair‘s April 2020 cover to Reese Witherspoon three years after the star’s last appearance. Shot by Jackie Nickerson on location at Inner Gardens in Malibu and styled by Samira Nasr, the Little Fires Everywhere actress clearly had a blast during the cover shoot wearing a showstopping Giambattista Valli creation.

But were our forum members impressed? “Even when they have a safe and popular choice, they still manage to muck it up. The styling looks preposterous and I get what the expression/pose is going for, but it just looks awkward for a cover,” said Benn98.

“What the hell is she wearing?” asked a dumbfounded caioherrero.

“That’s a choice. I’m rarely disappointed with Reese’s covers, but this might be one of them,” confessed MON.

Also not overly impressed was KINGofVERSAILLES: “Both eyes closed on the cover of a magazine? That’s new. In truth, I applaud Radhika anytime she produces a cover that looks unique compared with Graydon Carter’s Vanity Fair. This certainly fits the bill and I want to like it, but it just looks a bit too much like a ‘fun’ outtake.”

Not everyone agreed, however. “I want to hate this because it’s everything I detest in a magazine cover (zero engagement with the reader from the subject and a full-length shot), but somehow I don’t loathe the outcome? Maybe it’s Reese or just the fact that it’s different and outside the norm for Vanity Fair,” voiced vogue28.

“It’s cute and it’s fun — I’m not complaining!” Srdjan exclaimed.

Celine Dion Is Living Her Best Fashion Life and We Are So Here for It

With everything going on right now, we could all use a little pick-me-up. Enter Celine Dion. The legendary entertainer has transformed herself into an unlikely fashion icon. And we’re not mad about it.

It all started during Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week Fall 2019 when the singer upstaged everyone in the front rows. Not to mention taking some of the focus off the fashion coming down the runways. Which isn’t an easy thing to do.

And it wasn’t just a one-off. Celine kept the sartorial streak going in New York City late last year, including an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. But her recent looks are really giving us life, especially since most of us will stay indoors for the foreseeable future.

From a cape dress to a grand floral skirt to hot pink everything, Celine turned the streets of the Big Apple into her runway. The crème de la crème? A fresh-off-the-runway Richard Quinn for Moncler Genius ensemble complete with the matching floral tights.

While the rest of her world tour is postponed, you can still keep tabs on her stellar style thanks to Instagram. Or fill the fashion void in your life by scrolling through the slideshow above.

The Best Moisturizing Hand Soaps to Keep Your Hands Clean AND Soft

We all know we should be washing our hands several times a day. And that we should be doing so even when there isn’t a pandemic. But all that handwashing can be brutal on your skin. That’s where moisturizing hand soaps come in handy.

What do the best moisturizing hand soaps have in common?

While soap is designed to kill germs, it’s not always gentle on our hands. So it’s important to look for a hand soap boasting hydrating ingredients, like aloe, vitamin E and essential oils. For best results, we highly recommend using a moisturizing lotion or hand cream after every handwashing session.

Are there any antibacterial options?

While most of the best moisturizing hand soaps don’t bill themselves as “antibacterial,” they’ll still get your hands clean and kill all those nasty germs. If you still feel like you need an antibacterial option, simply swap in the moisturizing kinds into your routine a couple of times a day to give the sensitive skin on your hands a respite from harsh cleansers.

Check out the slideshow above to discover the best moisturizing hand soaps that are still in stock (albeit at some surprising locations).
