All the March 2020 Magazine Covers We Loved and Hated

Another month, another series of glossy covers. Since it’s March, most magazines are promoting their spring fashion issues with mixed results.

Who can we expect to see down at the newsstands?

While there wasn’t much in the way of diversity on the March 2020 covers, there were some unexpected cover stars. Like Jane Fonda (eye creases and all), a partially camouflaged Kylie Jenner and Billie Eilish, who was honored with four fantastic Vogue covers. Plenty of model covers dropped this month, though many were surprisingly underwhelming. And Emily Blunt landed multiple covers, but not all of them were well received by our forum members.

Spring has officially sprung.

When it came to fashion, a couple of magazines appear to support skipping spring and heading straight to summer. Other March 2020 covers favor more spring-friendly wardrobes, including season-appropriate coats and a fair share of florals. (It is springtime in the magazine world, after all.) There were even a few red carpet-worthy gowns. And one title dressed both its subjects in the exact same outfit for two different covers.

On the beauty front, red lips were practically a requirement. Vogue Japan opted to paint all six of its models’ pouts a striking ruby shade. Hell, ELLE Russia only featured a pair of perfectly stained and immediately identifiable crimson lips and the gap teeth that go with them.

Now that New York and London have wrapped up, it’s on to Milan Fashion Week. The Fall 2020 season has already delivered plenty of street style goodness and so far Milan is keeping it going.

So what’s proving popular in Italy’s fashion capital? The 70s are back in style with pointed collars, flared pants and retro floral patterns all making appearances. While skirt suits were a trend on the New York Fall 2020 runways, it’s all about oversized pantsuits out on the streets. When it comes to footwear, our favorite street style stars are heading to the shows in cool kicks and killer boots.

And the accessories! If you don’t already have a stash of belts to cinch everything from blazers to coats to cardigans, you’d better stock up. Suffering from mini bag fatigue? You’ll be happy to know that while they’re still around, midi and mega bags are also getting a lot of love at Milan Fashion Week. If you’re looking for some new sunglasses to celebrate spring, Milan’s street style experts have a few ideas. From classic cat-eye shades to colored lenses to round frames, there’s a pair for every face shape. Hats more your thing? Bucket hats are still trending and fedoras boasting different-sized brims are also having a moment.

Victoria Beckham Sizzles Under the Sun on Vogue Greece’s Pair of March 2020 Covers

Is there any edition of Vogue Victoria Beckham has yet to cover? After all, she has landed everything from Vogue Paris to Vogue Korea to Vogue Australia to Vogue Russia to British Vogue to American Vogue (alongside her fellow Spice Girls back in 1998) — and often returns for a second or third appearance. Victoria’s latest conquest is landing a set of Vogue Greece March 2020 sultry covers lensed by photographer Alexi Lubomirski. Complete with styling from Daniela Agnelli, Victoria sports her namesake label for the first cover (below) and dons a dress from Greek label Zeus + Dione on the second (after the jump).

The covers immediately caught the attention of our forum members. “These are actually gorgeous covers with VB. Like them both and the fact she has her eyes closed. The makeup looks great. Victoria is not someone I associate with summer, color or skin! But Vogue Greece really pulled it off, the cover with the blue dress is fantastic…” applauded Miss Dalloway.

“I actually like these, they make me long for a Greek vacation! The blue dress cover is a great throwback to the mid aughts,” said dodencebt.

“Love the first cover!” declared mikel.

But not everyone was impressed. “This woman’s desperation to be on every single edition of Vogue was at first annoying, but now it’s really sad because she knows it’s really the only way to keep herself in the fashion conversation. Maybe do fewer Vogue covers and focus more on your ailing business,” ranted Benn98.

“Such lazy covers. VB’s formula is starting to bore me already,” complained an underwhelmed MON.

Srdjan shared the same sentiment: “I can’t be appreciative of yet another cover with VB.”

Hailey Bieber Goes Retro on Vogue Spain’s Stunning March 2020 Cover

The industry continues to embrace Hailey Bieber and she must sell magazines like hot cakes since in the last few months we’ve seen the American beauty on the covers of Vogue Australia and Vogue Hong Kong. She’s even currently fronting the latest edition of American ELLE. In a move that surprises no one, Hailey just popped up on yet another international edition of Vogue. For March 2020, the model makes her debut on Vogue Spain wearing a look from Marc Jacobs’ Spring 2020 collection picked by Patrick Mackie for the 70s-inspired cover shot photographed by Emma Summerton.

Hailey’s gathering quite the following on our forums. “It’s hard to dislike her when she’s looking so beautiful in her recent work. In my eyes, she’s always going to be a celebrity subject and not an actual model, but this is yet another gorgeous Hailey cover — Vogue Australia, Vogue Hong Kong, ELLE and now Vogue Spain. She’s on a roll! Eat your heart out, Kendull,” raved aracic.

“Really beautiful and that Marc Jacobs collection photographs like a dream. I’m glad it’s everywhere,” added dodencebt.

“Oh, OK! This is easily her best cover and the best I have seen her look on a cover,” said a pleasantly surprised Miss Dalloway.

“This is definitely her best cover yet,” Benn98 agreed.

In the same frame of mind was jorgepalomo: “I dislike her, but it’s a gorgeous cover.”

“One of her best print jobs for sure!” expressed Xone.

“Gorgeous cover!” shared Handbag Queen.

Less Than Half of the Top 12 Models of New York Fashion Week Fall 2020 Were Women of Color

While we’re already well underway over in Milan, we’ve still got a bit of New York Fashion Week business to take care of. We’ve already covered the top trends, the best beauty looks and our forum members’ favorite and least favorite shows so what’s left? Counting down the top models, of course.

For Fall 2020, only four of the top 12 models in the Big Apple were women of color. Pretty disappointing, we know. But there were some familiar faces. Street style maven Sora Choi tops the list with an incredible list of big-name shows (she even opened Vera Wang and closed Tory Burch). Texas’ own Sara Grace Wallerstedt racked up 10 shows, including Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors Collection and Anna Sui. And French stunner Cyrielle Lalande once again finds herself in top model company.

Technically, there was a five-way tie for second and a seven-way tie for first. But we chose to break those ties by taking into consideration openings and closings and who walked for the most high-profile fashion houses.

Ana de Armas Deserves Better Than Vanity Fair’s Underwhelming March 2020 Cover

We’re always hoping to see new faces down at the newsstand. We even regularly call out fashion glossies for using the same cover subjects over and over again. (We’re looking at you Harper’s Bazaar.) So we’re pleasantly surprised to see Vanity Fair welcome actress Ana de Armas to its March cover. The title has been on a bit of a roll lately following a triumphant RuPaul cover and now the mag delights once again by selecting the soon-to-be Bond girl as its latest cover star. Photographed on location in Beverly Hills, Ana wears Louis Vuitton (courtesy of Samira Nasr) for the charming cover shot captured by Cass Bird.

But our forum members weren’t impressed. “Whoa! Easily the WORST shot of her I have ever seen!” declared Miss Dalloway.

“Always down for seeing someone new on magazine covers and I’m extremely excited for the upcoming James Bond movie, but this is one weak cover for the gorgeous Ana de Armas! I saw this on Instagram and genuinely thought it was some random international edition of Vanity Fair,” vogue28 chimed in.

Benn98 also wasn’t feeling the cover: “What a way to introduce a new face to the magazine public — run a cover with her looking half asleep in styling which resembles sleepwear. I don’t know who this girl is and based on what I see here I have no desire to find out.”

“Cass doesn’t seem the right photographer for Vanity Fair. Ana is gorgeous and will star in James Bond, why not use that as inspiration?” wondered apple.

“I predicted an American Vogue cover, but Radhika [Jones] snatched her first. I wish it was a more present shot because the styling and the background work for me,” noted dodencebt.

The cover did have a few fans like MON who called it “lovely.”

Almost as Many Misses as Hits at London Fashion Week Fall 2020

Not even Storm Dennis could prevent the industry’s elite from crossing the pond to check out the Fall 2020 shows at London Fashion Week. So it was up to the designers to bring some sunshine to the English capital via the runway.

Which designers reigned supreme?

Simone Rocha put a smile on everyone’s face with a “magically dreamy” collection as did London Fashion Week regulars Emilia Wickstead and JW Anderson. The most underrated designer around, aka Hussein Chalayan, proved every inch his worth with a collection that catered to all of our sartorial needs. Margaret Howell delivered a collection with zero gimmicks, but lots of covet-worthy jackets. And we predict a riot will ensue once Victoria Beckham’s accessories arrive in stores.

Which designers missed the mark?

With the triumphs came the disasters. Can someone let Riccardo Tisci know he needs to edit down his looks for Burberry? They all start to blend together after a while. We also suggest Matty Bovan steers clear of the fabric scrap heap. After making its London Fashion Week debut, we think 16Arlington should stick with a lookbook format. And we’re beginning to wonder if Richard Quinn is a one-trick pony.
