The Hits Outnumber the Misses at Milan Fashion Week Fall 2020

Milan Fashion Week is officially over and it was nothing short of spectacular (despite Giorgio Armani showing his latest collection without an audience due to coronavirus concerns). But if you’ve missed any of the Fall 2020 action over the last few days, we’ve got you covered.

Which designers reigned supreme?

Silvia Venturini Fendi, Fendi’s creative director post-Karl Lagerfeld, proved she’s one to watch by supplying an exquisite collection. She also enlisted Jill Kortleve and Paloma Elsesser as the first-ever plus-size models to walk in a Fendi show. Jeremy Scott brought some fun to Milan Fashion Week with his Marie Antoinette-inspired Moschino offering with models morphing into the queen sporting her elaborate hairstyle and pannier dresses (mixed with Scott’s signature flair, of course). Prada impressed with a “classic” collection and Dolce & Gabbana finally found its way back into our forum members’ good graces.

Which designers missed the mark?

Donatella Versace couldn’t top Jennifer Lopez’s catwalk moment from last season. Ian Griffiths completely forgot who the Max Mara customer is. The Emilio Pucci revival was downright disappointing. And Alessandro Michele actually inspired our forums to start rooting for a Frida Giannini comeback.

Cropped Blazers Are Trending on the Fall 2020 Runways, but Work for Spring

With warmer weather (hopefully) right around the corner, we’ve been looking to the Spring 2020 runway shows for guidance. From 70s-style pointed collar shirts to long denim skirts to polka dots to drawstring, well, everything, there are lots of fresh trends to choose from. But while we wait with breath that is bated for the temperature to at least get to 60, the Fall 2020 trends have been slowly revealing themselves and, surprisingly, many are spring-appropriate.

One of our favorite trans-seasonal options? Cropped blazers. From Christopher John Rogers and Rotate Birger Christensen’s shiny takes to Eckhaus Latta’s orange set, the cropped blazer is proving to be a key wardrobe staple for Fall 2020. But thanks to their shortened silhouette, they’re perfect for showing some skin in spring.

Now unless you work in a very creative workplace, cropped blazers aren’t exactly office-appropriate. But they are very weekend-worthy. Just think how put-together you’ll look running errands in a cropped blazer, a white tee, jeans and some form of sandals. Or brunching with your besties after slipping a more casual incarnation over a slip-dress-and-flats combo. They also double as spring jackets in case you’re looking to make your wardrobe a little more versatile. And when the weather starts to get chilly again come fall, you can always wear a sweater under your blazer to keep warm.

Zendaya Stars on Vogue Australia’s Questionable March 2020 Cover

We’re always happy to see Zendaya, but some of our favorite fashion glossies have never truly been able to do the Euphoria star justice. Not even Allure, InStyle or Vogue have gotten it right (but Marie Claire and ELLE have). Now Zendaya takes to the cover of Vogue Australia making her debut on the Aussie fashion bible for March 2020. Posing before the lens of Daniel Jackson with Christine Centenera on styling duties, Zendaya wears a look from Gucci’s Spring 2020 collection for the cover shot.

Zendaya’s latest split our forums. “They did her dirty. They managed to make her look like she was in a brothel. This doesn’t even look like my Zendaya. Seems like Vogue Australia is on a mission to butcher every gorgeous cover star they have,” called out MON.

“Awful. And normally Daniel Jackson is pretty reliable. What happened here?” asked mikel.

“Awful shot of her, awful styling and awful art direction,” said Miss Dalloway.

In the same frame of mind was Benn98: “Looks dirty and grimy and not in a sexy way. Jackson only excels in the studio.”

“I would never have guessed Daniel Jackson had shot this, purely because it’s so harsh and untypical of Jackson’s usual work. The cover shot is hideous, hate the styling from Christine Centenera, the set, the mood and that deeply unattractive font,” complained vogue28.

Forum member slayage couldn’t have disagreed more. “I love this. After last month’s pedestrian-looking cover, I was expecting something similar for March, but THANK GOD they finally produced imagery that cannot be found on the pages of Marie Claire in favor of something more fashion-y.”

“I think that the cover is refreshing! The green makes you feel nostalgic about the (now) vintage 2000s,” Srdjan shared.

Report: Diversity Down in All Categories at New York Fashion Week Fall 2020

Every season when we put together our famous Diversity Reports, we always expect hope that racial, size, age and gender representation will go up. And for many seasons, that has been the case. Normally known for some of the most diverse castings across all four fashion capitals, New York Fashion Week stumbled for Fall 2020.

RACE

We were most surprised to see the percentage of models of color drop this season by over three points from Spring 2020. After reviewing 1,940 model appearances across 61 major shows, New York Fashion Week Fall 2020 saw only 43.6 percent models of color down from 46.8 percent for Spring 2020. In fact, it’s the lowest percentage since Fall 2018 when there were only 37.3 percent models of color in the Big Apple. (To refresh your memory, Fall 2019 saw 45.8 percent and Spring 2019 44.8 percent.)

The disappointing plunge can be partially explained by the mass exodus of designers to other cities. Tom Ford showed in Los Angeles, Tommy Hilfiger opted for London and Jeremy Scott postponed his Fall 2020 show until haute couture week. Then there were the brands that didn’t show at all, like Pyer Moss.

On a positive note, every show featured models of color. A small victory, but still significant. There was also a lot of crossover with the size, age and gender categories all featuring models of color.

TOP MODELS

Sadly, the top models of Fall 2020 followed the same downward path. Only four of the top 12 models were women of color, amounting to just a little over 33 percent. The good news? Three of those four tied for first place.

South Korean model and street style star Sora Choi, British-Moroccan beauty Nora Attal, the United States’ own Abby Champion, U.K. native Lara Mullen, familiar French face Cyrielle Lalande, Josefine Lynderup from Denmark and Chinese model Yilan Hua all walked in 11 shows. While U.K. beauty Hannah Motler, Texan Sara Grace Wallerstedt, Jamaican stunner Kyla Ramsey, German model Julia Merkelbach and Juliane Grüner from Denmark each had 10 shows under their belts.

As usual, size, age and gender representation was missing from the top models list.

PLUS-SIZE

After a truly impressive Spring 2020 season in which a record 68 plus-size models (2.92 percent) walked a total of 19 shows, this season size diversity plummeted to a disappointing 27 appearances across 16 shows, only 1.4 percent. That’s over a 1.5 percent drop off.

Christian Siriano hired the most non-standard-size models. The eight models who walked his runway include Marquita Pring, Precious Lee, Sabina Karlsson, Solange van Doorn, Seynabou Cissé, Candice Huffine, Chloé Véro and Ingrid Medeiros. Several other brands enlisted two plus-size models: Tadashi Shoji (Lorena Duran, Michelle Olson), Dennis Basso (Malia Greiner, Angela Riihiluoma), Area (Tehya Elam, Betsy Teske) and Collina Strada (Theresa Chromati, Alva Claire). Marc Jacobs, Oscar de la Renta, Eckhaus Latta, Nicole Miller, Christopher John Rogers, Prabal Gurung, LaQuan Smith, Veronica Beard, Michael Kors Collection and Rag & Bone each cast one plus-size model. Alexis Ruby, Tess McMillan, Paloma Elsesser, Karlsson, Elam, McMillan, Claire, Huffine, Jill Kortleve, Kortleve, respectively.

Despite the decline in overall representation, a good portion of the 27 appearances came from plus-size models of color. (Nineteen, to be exact.)

TRANSGENDER/NON-BINARY

Transgender and non-binary models also saw a decrease in representation. While Spring 2020 saw 36 appearances or 1.55 percent across 19 shows, for Fall 2020 there were only 10 transgender/non-binary castings or a measly 0.52 percent across eight shows. That’s a little over 1 percent difference.

Non-binary model Noah Carlos walked for Self-Portrait, Prabal Gurung and Coach 1941. Transgender model Dara Allen represented Dion Lee and Prabal Gurung. Massima Desire, also transgender, hit the runway for Dion Lee and Eckhaus Latta. Phillipe Blond, who identifies as non-binary, naturally popped up at The Blonds, while transgender model Ariel Nicholson and Richie Moo appeared at Marc Jacobs and Christopher John Rogers, respectively.

While none of these castings went to plus-size or 50-and-over models, it wasn’t a total whitewash. (Allen and Carlos are both of mixed backgrounds.)

AGE

Models age 50 and above also saw a decline. After the number of aged models in Spring 2020 (15 models in a total of 10 shows, accounting for 0.65 percent of castings) tied with Fall 2019 (15 models walked in 13 shows for 0.68 percent), a paltry 10 appeared on nine runways for Fall 2020 or 0.52 percent.

Prabal Gurung cast Anh Duong, Collina Strada booked Kathleen McCain Engman, Christopher John Rogers chose Coco Mitchell, The Blonds cast Gloria Trevi, Dennis Basso selected Lisa Rinna. Sylke Golding, the only 50-and-over model to rack up more than one appearance, walked for Nicole Miller and Eckhaus Latta (Eckhaus Latta cast one additional aged model). The other casting came courtesy of Priscavera.

There was some diversity in this category with three women of color (Duong, Mitchell and Trevi) making appearances.

MOST AND LEAST DIVERSE SHOWS

Claudia Li had the most racially diverse show of Fall 2020 with 83 percent models of color, but Area was the big diversity winner this season thanks to 78 percent models of color, two plus-size models and one aged model. Christopher John Rogers also impressed with 76 percent models of color, one aged model, one transgender/non-binary model and one plus-size model. Brandon Maxwell (60 percent models of color), Anna Sui (59 percent models of color), LaQuan Smith (57 percent models of color, one plus-size model) and Prabal Gurung (56 percent models of color, one aged model, one transgender model, one non-binary model and one plus-size model) round out the list of the most diverse shows this season.

Once again, the least diverse show list has several familiar names. Son Jung Wan only had 6 percent models of color, Vivienne Hu 13 percent, Cinq à Sept 24 percent, Badgley Mischka and Naeem Khan each had 29 percent and Nicole Miller had 30 percent. Son Jung Wan, Vivienne Hu and Badgley Mischka are repeat offenders, but at least the latter raised its percentage from last season.

It’s truly disappointing to see the numbers drop in every single category this season. Especially since they’ve been on an upward trajectory for a few seasons now. It’s also distressing because New York Fashion Week tends to be the most diverse of all the fashion capitals so we’re bracing ourselves for the grand Fall 2020 totals to be down as well. We’re hoping, and demanding, that the industry does better for Spring 2021.

Candice Swanepoel Rocks Double Denim on Vogue Japan’s ‘Basic’ April 2020 Cover

Our month is pretty much made whenever Luigi & Iango shoot the cover of Vogue Japan (or any other magazine cover for that matter). But thanks to a rather disappointing model extravaganza offering last month, Luigi & Iango’s last Japanese Vogue outing fell short. Ditching the multi-girl concept this time around, Candice Swanepoel goes solo in an attempt to help the photographic duo redeem itself for April 2020. The South African stunner rocks double denim (from Celine’s Spring 2020 collection) picked by Anna Dello Russo for the straightforward and polished cover shot.

Once again Vogue Japan divided our forums. “So I guess the background covers didn’t perform well if they’re back to their old self again. I’m mad about the denim-on-denim look personally so I like the styling and it’s the only thing I like here,” commented Benn98.

“Two months in a row for Candice! Nice to know there’s still a Vogue Japan cover slot for a genuine supermodel. I’m a creature of habit so I’m delighted that they’re back to their text-heavy, white-backdrop, literal-styling self,” applauded magsaddict.

“What a bombshell!” raved CocoM.

But not everyone was pleased with the outcome. “Make no mistake that I’m a Luigi & Iango fan, but the word ‘basic’ sprung to mind when I first saw this,” admitted vogue28.

MON wasn’t impressed, either. “Yikes. Everything is basic. The hair. The styling. The pose. Even the color scheme. Luigi & Iango excels with colored backgrounds. The white ones almost always fall flat. Next.”

“I LOVE Candice to death! But that is not a good facial expression…” proclaimed guimon.

“I’m getting bored Jessica Simpson at the mall vibes from the styling, but I don’t care because it’s still better than everything else out there at the moment,” voiced marsnoop2.

Raf Simons Signs On as Prada’s Co-Creative Director

Milan Fashion Week Fall 2020 was already making news thanks to Giorgio Armani’s decision to show his collection in an empty room due to the coronavirus outbreak. Now the Italian fashion capital is in the headlines yet again because of an unexpected announcement.

For months rumors have been swirling about where Raf Simons would land after leaving Calvin Klein. Well, we finally know the answer. It was just revealed during Milan Fashion Week that the cult favorite designer is joining Italian institution Prada.

Set to serve as co-creative director alongside Miuccia Prada, Simons’ new gig doesn’t start until April with the designing duo’s first joint collection set to premiere during Milan Fashion Week Spring 2021. “We feel the need to join as creative people in a dialogue, to bring emotion and bring co-creation,” said Simons. In case you’re wondering, the designer’s Raf Simons label will continue.

We’re excited for this new partnership and our minds are whirling trying to imagine what the outcome will look like. Simons totally transformed Calvin Klein’s ready-to-wear business offering up everything from shark tees and tanks to balaclavas. Prada has been going old school lately by bringing back its iconic nylon bags with a sustainable twist. So who knows what the dynamic duo will send down the runway.

But there’s one thing we can guarantee: everyone will be checking out Prada’s Spring 2021 show come September.
