Chanel has been extra basically since its inception (has there ever been anyone cooler than Coco Chanel?) and Karl Lagerfeld has helped the French fashion brand grow exponentially. While a tweed jacket is a safe bet, lately the street style faithful have been after those PVC rain hats and the brand’s quilted shopping bags to fold under their arms.

If you don’t know who Phoebe Philo is, we can’t help you. Synonymous with this French designer brand, the designer’s departure has left many Celine die-hards in mourning. Hedi Slimane was brought in to give the brand a makeover, but it remains to be seen how this beacon of French designer brands evolves. Notoriously difficult to find online, Celine shades are an easy way for us mortals to get in on the action.

Balenciaga
While founder Cristóbal Balenciaga was actually born in Spain, the house he created has firm French roots since he was forced to relocate to Paris in 1937 due to the Spanish Civil War. Now under the experimental hand of Demna Gvasalia, the French fashion brand produces must-have everything, from plaid skirts to Knife boots.

Givenchy
While some of us are still mourning the loss of Riccardo Tisci at Givenchy, the French designer brand is staying relevant thanks to Clare Waight Keller’s takeover. Regardless of who’s running the show, the brand is still churning out red carpet gowns and logo pieces for all of us to fawn over.
