Yalitza Aparicio Becomes Vogue Mexico’s First-Ever Indigenous Cover Star

You’d think regional issues of magazines would jump at the chance to promote native talent, but that’s not always the case. Take, for example, the October 2018 issue of Vogue Japan, where singer Namie Amuro was the first Japanese woman to appear on the cover in over a year. Now, surprisingly, Vogue Mexico features a native Mexican for the first time in its 20-year history. The magazine welcomes Yalitza Aparicio, the breakout star of Roma, to the cover of its January 2019 issue, photographed in Christian Dior by Santiago and Mauicio.

Naturally, our forum members were thrilled. “The best cover in the history of Vogue Mexico! Period!” declared zacatecas570.

“Wow, whoever is in charge of Vogue Mexico’s casting is doing a spectacular job. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect. And such an inspiring subject too. I like that the focus is on her. Not fashion or photography. Great job, and a strong start to 2019,” raved Benn98.

“I ADORE everything about this, especially given Mexico’s classist history. I also love that the Mixteco language is used on the cover. Bravo Vogue Mexico!” said marsnoop2.

“As a Mexican, I felt so proud and literally cried when I saw the cover,” shared jorgepalomo.

IndigoHomme felt exactly the same way. “STUNNING, no words for this! The first time I see the real Mexico in this magazine,” he proclaimed.

“I am S T U N N E D. WOW! For those not in the know, Vogue Mexico/Latin America has NEVER featured anyone indigenous/mestizo on its cover. This is as significant as Beverly Johnson on her first American Vogue cover,” added Joromana.

“This is already a historic cover, so iconic!” forum member ghostwriter10549 cheered.

Join the standing ovation and be sure to share your thoughts on Vogue Mexico’s triumphant new cover here.
