AARY Athletica
AARY Athletica is a recently launched New Zealand brand that is ethically manufactured by textile workers who are paid a fair wage and work in a safe environment. It also uses eco-friendly, compostable packaging made from plants. Plus, its labeling is made from sugar cane bagasse (agricultural processing waste) and the brand works with the DHL Go Green Solutions initiative, an environmental protection program with a global target of zero emissions by 2050. Lastly, it has eco-friendly fabrics in the works and has partnered with One Tree Planted: for each item purchased, one tree is planted.
Nimble Activewear
Part of the wave of stylish activewear coming from Australia, Nimble makes stylish and wearable prints at relatively affordable prices. In addition to donating AU$1 from every online order sale to I = Change, an organization that empowers women, its signature compression fabric is made from recycled plastic bottles and produced within an 80 kilometer radius of Taiwan, helping to reduce waste, packaging and transport.
Girlfriend Collective
Girlfriend Collective is a sustainable brand that offers amazing fits and on-trend, color-coordinated styles via leggings and bras made from recycled water bottles and recycled fishing nets. Girlfriend Collective is size-inclusive and uses models of all shapes and ethnicities.
Free People
Free People just launched its latest Movement collection featuring pieces made from Econyl, a 100-percent regenerated nylon fiber made with discarded waste collected from landfills and oceans (think: fishing nets and fabric scraps). The material is identical to virgin nylon and can be recycled, recreated and repurposed infinitely. Basically, this fabric allows new products to be made without ever having to use new resources.
Outdoor Voices
Outdoor Voices apparel is manufactured in facilities that minimize environmental impact and use fabrics including recycled polyester crafted from recycled water bottles that are melted down and turned into fibers for signature pieces, including the EcoMesh T-shirt and EcoMesh Tank. Its Relay Shorts, Hudson Shorts and MegaFleece Shorts are also eco-friendly.
Dr. Scholl's
When you think of stylish sneakers, you don't think of Dr. Scholl's — at least, until you see these new kicks. Not only does this sporty style look good, it's made using sustainable materials including a knit upper that's primarily made from recycled bottles, a lace-up front with recyclable eyelets, chrome-free repurposed scrap leather accents and algae-based insole and midsole.
Boody Wear
Boody Wear is a line of everyday essential apparel made using viscose derived from bamboo. It’s super soft, comfortable, moisture-wicking and thermo-regulating. The original bamboo used requires no pesticides, fertilizers or artificial irrigation during the growth process. All water used during the production is recycled. Most of the garments are computer knitted so there is no fabric waste. The final product carries multiple certifications, including Confidence in Textiles, which certifies the final fabric is free of any harmful chemicals. Boody is PETA certified, and packaging is recyclable and printed using vegetable based inks.
Yogavated
Yogavated is a zero-waste brand that makes all of its products using fabrics sourced from dead-stock material. During production, all of the scraps are saved and turned into tag strings or headbands, and the smaller scraps are used to stuff dog beds, which are donated to the local shelter. The brand regularly works with local artists for the collections.
Prana
Prana is certified by a number of organizations, including Fair Trade, and the brand uses sustainable materials for many of its products, including organic cotton and recycled wool.
We probably don’t need to tell you that the production of synthetic materials like spandex and nylon aren’t exactly amazing for the environment, but as active women, we get that there is a certain comfort and convenience that’s hard to give up.
While many brands have found ways to use organic cotton, bamboo and other materials to fashion activewear pieces that won’t pollute our oceans, landfills and even the digestive tracts of living organisms, others are leaving their mark by being conscious when it comes to choosing packaging materials, opting for eco-friendly packaging and partaking in initiatives like the DHL Go Green Solutions to help reduce environmental impact. Other brands have made it a point to repurpose synthetic materials.
Since we first spotlighted activewear brands leading the charge for change, the field has only grown in all directions. Here’s a look at the stylish standouts that are making serious efforts to be eco-friendly.
